Show Iceland Mayor Visits in City An interesting visitor in Springville the past weekend, was Stefan Gummlaugson, the mayor of Hafnarf jordur, Iceland, Ice-land, who is in the United States at the invitation of the State Department. During his stay in Springville, Spring-ville, he was a guest at the J. Y. Bearnson home and also snoke in Springville stake quarterly conference. Only 32 years of age, the visiting vi-siting mayor whose job in his native land is similar to a city manager, was educated for the position and was appointed ap-pointed by a body similar to our city councilmen. He commented at conference that he was impressed by the important part the church plays in the every day life of the individuals in this state. He confered with Mayor J. Emmett Bird and local problems prob-lems while here. He was especially es-pecially impressed with the manufacture of salt near Great Salt Lake and told how men from Germany had come to his land to harness hot water from the springs to create power for a mill to take the salt from ocean water. |
