Show with a dummy in the cockpit and extinguish it. After our noon meal, we checked out and headed back to central Utah. We carried with us memories of an exciting stay and also a certificate signed by Captain Everett W. Seath, United States Air Force, commanding officer of the Explorer project, pro-ject, stating that we had satisfactorily satis-factorily completed the "Encampment." Scouts Make Trip To Hill AF Base by Don Johnson I was chosen as one of two explorer Scouts from Hobble Creek District, to the 3-day Air encampment at Hill Air Force Base. The other scout from here was Allen Crowley. We arrived at the base early and along with the other 88 explorers from Utah and Wyoming Wyo-ming were assigned to our barracks. Thursday afternoon we had several classes on weather and chart reading. We had "chow'' at the Mess Hall and from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. each night we had free time to go to the P.X. On Friday morning we got up at 5:30 a.m. and went to chow. Later we cleaned the barracks for inspection. Later we had a drill instructor from the Air Police drill us and did calisthenics. In the afternoon we toured the base and were escorted through a Globemaster and were shown the Radar installations installa-tions and scopes. Later we were taken for an airplane ride, strapped in an air force paracnute ani also strapped in our bucket seats. The plane was equivalent to a civilian DC3 and carried 12 scouts. Our flight took us over Great Salt Lake, out over the Bingham Bing-ham Copper Mine and back up over Salt Lake City for a 50 minute trip. Friday night they had a dance at the Service club with music by the band from the. Base with hostesses brought down from St. Mary's School in Ogden. Saturday morning we were up again at 5:30, went to chow, came back and cleaned our barracks for inspection. After inspection we were shown some films featuring "The Thunderbirds," the Air Force's percision flying team. We were also shown a film on how to make and read maps and assigned a problem of charting a course. The last activity was watching watch-ing the fire department set fire to an old F-84 fuselage |
