Show Referee and Two Judges Will Officiate at Title Bout; Identity Withheld, i Indications Are That Ollie Pecord cf Toledo Will Be Third Man in Ring, With Bill Brown of New York and Jack Welch of San Francisco as Advisers. TOLEDO, Ohio, June 23. Selection of officials to decide the heavyweight championship contest between Dempsey and Willard Wil-lard July 4 will not be announced until Friday. Postponement of the announcement, scheduled for tomorrow, was caused tonight by the failure of Adam Empie, secretary of the army, navy and civilian board of boxing control, and AY. A. Gavin, a member of 'the executive committee, to leave for New York on the train they intended. Empie and Gavin left at 11 o'clock tonight, but "because they will not arrive in New York until 5:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon it will be impossible, they said, to hold a meeting of the executive committee of the boxing control board until Friday. A distinct surprise was caused today i when it was announced there would be three officials, two judges and a referee, ; to decide the contest. Both Willard and Jack Kearns, manager of Dempsey, had declared they were opposed to the three-man three-man system. Willard's consent was obtained ob-tained this morning, while Kearns agreed to the proposal this afternoon. It was learned that the officials likely i to he chosen are Jack Welch, veteran referee of San Francisco; Bill Brown of I Xew York and Ollie Pecord, official referee ref-eree of the Toledo boxing commission. Pecord is being considered in the capacity of referee, -it was said, while Brown and Welch are expected to be chosen the judges. j "The referee question has been definite- I ly decided," lllckard said. "I can state : there will be two judges and a referee. Both men have agreed to this. I will make formal announcement of the appointment ap-pointment as soon as I have been notified 1 by the boxing tontrol board." |
