Show KING IN DISTRESS. Former King Constantine of Greece is living in straightened circumstances in Switzerland, the subsidy granted him by the ex-kaiser having been cut off. Constantine is endeavoring to become be-come reconciled with the present Greek government, according to advices ad-vices from Geneva. As the present king of Greece is the second son of the former ruler the latter may be supplied sup-plied with money enough to live without with-out work and we do not suppose Premier Pre-mier Vcnizelos would make any violent objection. Up to the time that he began be-gan to show sympathy- with the Germans Ger-mans Constantine was very popular in Greece. He had shown marked military mili-tary ability in the Balkan wars and was more or less of a hero in tho eyes of the Greeks. So in spile of the fact that he "guessed wrong" in company wit l the king of Bulgaria and the sultan sul-tan of Turkey it is probable many of the former subjects wish him well and would be willing to contribute to his support so long as he remains in exile, believing that loss of his throno and banishment, is punishment enough. Greece is coming out of the great European Euro-pean struggle in much better physical and political condition than she has enjoyed for many centuries and will no doubt regain some of her former prestige as a world power. This happy state of affairs is entirely due to the untiring energy and far-sightedness of Premier Vcnizelos, the real ruler of the country. Had Constantine listened to the advice of the premier he would not now be under the painful necessity of asking alms. |
