Show VILLA DENIES ANY PLANS FOR REPRISAL FOR JUAREZ 'RAIDS' EL PASO, June 20. Villa will make no reprisals upon American property and lives in Mexico because American troops drove his men back from the border Sunday Sun-day night, a courier from Villa's camp near Villa Ahumada, who arrived here last night on an important mission, declared. de-clared. The position of the Angeles headquar ters, as revealed by a communication to General Erwin and by the courier's statement to the Associated Press, showed that the Villa forces were much nearer the border than was at first believed be-lieved by the military. Reports received by Villa agents here yesterday Indicated that a part of the column was moving from Samalayuca in the general direction of Santa Clara canyon with another column col-umn reported moving toward the Mormon colonies. As Colonel J. J. Hornbrook's cavalry regiment went approximately fifteen miles south and southwest of Juarez Monday afternoon in pursuit of the Villa rebels, his column was within fifteen miles of the field base at Samalayuca, ! Moving South- ' Reports received here today, after the return of the Angeles courier, stated that the headquarters had moved south to Villa Ahumada, eighty-three miles south of the border and at the junction of the Mexican Central railroad and the wagon road from Guadalupe on the border. Train service has been restored between Chihuahua City and Torreon, according to an American who arrived here today from Chihuahua City by way of Laredo. The road was cut south of Chihuahua City by Villa last month. The American said everything was quiet In the Chihuahua capital on June 10, when he left, and mining companies were shipping ore south from Chihuahua City. General Dleguez was bringing troops north for the campaign against Villa when the American departed. Troop Movement Detained. JUAREZ, Mexico, June 20. Troops destined des-tined for the Casas Grandes district to guard Mormon colonists are being detained de-tained along the way by the necessity of repairing sections of the railroad "destroyed "de-stroyed by Villa forces prior to their recent re-cent attack on this city. It was learned today. Repair crews are placing the railroad rail-road south in condition for use again and part of the troops bound for Casas Grandes are guarding these workers, while the others are being held here. Repairs will be completed within two or three days, these officers said, to such extent that trains can be run to within a short distance of the colonies. The repair re-pair crew yesterday worked only two or three miles from Juarez, but today was working about eight miles south of here. "John Anderson," an American citizen, killed in Juarez last Saturday night when Villa forces fought their way into the city, really was John Henderson McLaren, Mc-Laren, it was learned today at tho American consulate, which is preparing a final report on his death. He had a ! brother living in Hobart, Ind., to whom I word of his death has been sent. I McLaren, according to information : gathered by the consulate, was In jail here when Villa attacked. Apparently some of the prisoners were freed by Villa followers and McLaren was standing outside out-side the Jail door when a bullet struck him, inflicting a fatal wound. The body was buried In a local cemetery. Military men here today expressed tne belief that several bombing planes brought north to Chihuahua City by General Manuel DIeguez for use against Villa will prove very effective. These planeB are flying dally there, It was learned, and ' are expected soon to be sent north. Recruiting Authorized. ! WASHINGTON", June 20. Announce-; Announce-; ment was made today that Secretary Baker had authorized the recruftlng of i 2C,450 men for service on the Mexican ; border. They will replace men enlisted i for the war emergency and now eligible ! for discharge. ! Men will be enlisted for the following j arms and corps, not to exceed the num-I num-I bers Indicated : I White infantry, 8000; Infantry (negro), 2000; cavalry, 10,000; field artillery, 2000; engineers, S00: medical corps, 1200; ordnance, ord-nance, 150; signal corps, 300; air service, 500, and quartermaster corps, 1500. Flight of Family Denied. LAREDO, Texas. June 20. Reports that members of the family of President Carranza had come to the United States because of serious conditions in Mexico were denied here today in circles claiming claim-ing to be closely connoctod with the Carranza Car-ranza government. It was said the Carranza Car-ranza family has no intention of leaving |
