Both golfers are of slight physique and the climb up the mountainous thirty-third thirty-third fairway In the torrid heat did not deter them from driving almost to the green on the 300-yard thirty-fourth across a wide valley 200 feet deep. Their balls lay ten feet apart, and Bockenkamp Bocken-kamp brought applause from the gallery as he pitched a perfectly cut shot to within four feet of the pin, while his opponent was only a couple of feet away on his second, but grazed the cup while Bockenkamp sank his for a birdie and was one up again. Bromfield hooked his drive on the 435-yard 435-yard thirty-sixth and found a pit, whence he extricated himself 200 short of the green. He was on in three with a beautiful beau-tiful iron, but Bockenkamp put home a fine brassie second, twenty feet from the flag and holed a birdie four, Bromfield missing a 25-foot try for a half, and the match was over. They played the bye hole, 400 yards, Bockenkamp getting a par four, which made his score for 36 holes 37-39-35-36 147, equal to the low medal score of Clarence Clar-ence Wolff in the qualifying rounds. |
