Show Jess Puts Out Heinen in Peculiar Way; Jack to Resume Boxing Today Latest Sparring Partner Sent Into Dreamland by Champ; Jock Malone and Billy Miske Will Help Dempsey Put Finishing Touches on His Speed. By BAT PEARSON. (Tribune Special Service.) TOLEDO Ohio, June 20. A cold knockout and a peculiar one was registered in the training camp of Champion Jess WlUard In his Casino ring this afternoon. The way Willard worked In his nine rounds of boxing with his sparring partners stills all talk of his lack of condition. Vlclousness, terrific punching, and al. other tests that a man gets in a ring, were given the champion this afternoon. He stood up under them without faltering, falter-ing, without any display of weakness without giving the slightest evidence of tiring. This was the Willard I saw in the ring today, and somehow or other that flabbl-ness flabbl-ness of stomach which has adorned the midsection of JeSs seemed the more dif" cult to see. Perhaps It will be necessary for Willard to remove more weight before he gets into the ring; perhaps not. A guess may go wrong, but it Is our guess, and it Is a safe bet, too. that the champion cham-pion could go into the ring tomorrow and battle to retain his crown. He could put up a battle equally as proficient as he put up some four years ago when he knocked out Jack Johnson in Havana, Cuba, and annexed the greatest honors to be attained in pugilism. A reputation might be staked on that. Weight No Puzzle. Willard did not get on the scales to-dav, to-dav, so no one Knows exactly what he weighs at the present minute. That, however, does not seem to be a matter of concern with the champion. It is as apparent as It is that night will follow day, that the titleholder Is going to consider con-sider the matter of reducing of no great consequence from now until the afternoon after-noon of July , just two weeks from today. to-day. The champion is going after something else. He's going after perfection in boxing box-ing skill, and that includes fast movement move-ment of hands and feet, quick thinking and hard punching, the kind of punching that rocks an opponent In the cradle of BlAnd, with this, he Is working for that other Important essential, ability to assimilate as-similate punishment. Yes, he's working as hard for It as for offensive skill. He stood In the Casino ring this afternoon and allowed his helpers to pelt him on the body with all the force they could put into their punches. His hands were blockless ana Tie attempted no uiieiiae in retaliation. Then, when he had finished that spell of boxing, which was featured by the cold and spectacular knockout referred to previously, big Jess and Jack Hemple took a turn at hurling the medicine ball at one another. That Willard's medicine ball is a heavy article, Is an easy admission, admis-sion, but Big Jess allowed Hemple to stand four feet away from him and throw it as hard as he could to Willard's stomach. stom-ach. That sort of force was assimilated without flinching. Outside the Ropes. Clear outside of the ropes of the ring lay the massive form of Jack Heinen after Willard had shot him into dreamland dream-land in his second round with Heinen, the seventh round of the afternoon's boxing. Helnen's eyes were closed and the water cure was applied to revive him. Jack was through with his day's work after that. Willard upset Heinen within the fourth , round, or his first with that sparrini partner. A right cross did the trick, but Jack wasn't stunned and pot up quickly sliding through to the finish of the session ses-sion nicely. But in that seventh round the lights went out and a unique knock out was pulled. The champion was bu'l ing around the ring nnd was in a clinch with Heinen when he suddenly swunjr Jack through the ropea. Then with Helnen's Heln-en's head outside the hemp, Jess pulled his right arm out of the clinch and crossed with his fist to the jaw. Down wAnf thft snarrinir nartnnr Vila v.n c-n. ing the floor with a resounding whack That's the only knockout the writer ever has seen outside of a ring, for Heinen was outside when he went to sleep. Hemple Hem-ple got three rounds, Monaghan two and Chip a couple, totaling nine for the workout. work-out. It is evident from the way that Willard Wil-lard is working to strengthen his stomach muscles that he figures Dempsey is go-ing go-ing to make a strong play on that part of his anatomy. All along everybody around this fight town has believed that line of attack would be employed to a considerable extent by Jack the Giant Killer. So, if a heavy medicine ball can't cause any annoyance .to the champion when it lands full force on his stomach, he should be able to stand a mighty hard wallop in the midsection without cav. ing in. Hardens Stomach Muscles. Willard's workout today was more pep. ful than for several days. He worked fast and energetically. While the champion cham-pion was busy, Dempsey made it an easy day, but got another chance to jump into the ring while it was raining. Willard had just finished his work when the clouds opened. But Jack shadow boxed around his ring while the raindrops pelted him and enjoyed it. He also punched the bag for a while. The first fatality that had any connection connec-tion with this fight was registered today and was due to the excessive heat Jack Cohen, 33 years old, of Toledo, was t spectator at the Casino camp workout yesterday afternoon and suffered sunstroke. sun-stroke. He succumbed In St. Vincent's hospital this morning. Cerebral hemorrhage hem-orrhage was the immediate cause of death. Dempsey will resume training tomorrow, tomor-row, after a layoff due to the cut over his right eye. Jack Malone, a welterweight from St. Paul, and Bllle Miske, a St. Paul light heavyweight, are scheduled to Join the challenger's staff tomorrow. |
