Show KNOX RESOLUTION DEAD. The Knox resolution, after having been amended by the foreign relations committee before being reported to the senate, will probably never reach a vote on account of the pronounced opposition op-position of Republican senators who favor a league of nations. It is now said that the resolution was designed to give notice of opposition to accepting accept-ing the league covenant along with the. peace terms, in which case it will cease to serve its purpose after Germany has accepted the treaty. It is a poor explanation. The truth about the matter mat-ter beyond any reasonable doubt is that tho public sentiment for a league of nations is so strong throughout the country that it was thought best to let the resolution die rather than risk a reaction now that tho political trend favors the Republicans. The opposition opposi-tion to the league has already gone too far and it is time to back up unless un-less the peace pact is to be the issue in the presidential campaign next year. We notice that Chairman Hays of the Republican national committee has returned to Washington for a month's stay after a tour of tho middle west. Immediately after his arrival at the national capital Chairman Hays reported re-ported "that, by and large, the interest inter-est in the west is iu national questions, with the high point of appreciation being be-ing centered in what congress is doing with efficiency and economy. " Tho house has been giving attention to such matters while the senate has been devoting its time to a document which has not yet been submitted for ratification. ratifi-cation. It is time for the senators to get busy with legislation . and leave partisan politics alone long enough to pass some of tho bills which failed in the closing hours of the last congress. There aro any number of important problems to be considered and tho time of the senators should not be wasted listening to speeches upon resoluuons such as the one introduced by Senator Knox, which it is now claimed was more or less ot a fraud upon its face. Business before politics should be the slogan of the senators and representatives representa-tives while the work of reconstruction is in progress. |
