Garho-.d, suffragan bishop of Pennsylvania, today declined election as missionary bUhop of L'tah. The house of birhope of the Protestant Kpiscopal church, in ..-on'-'f-ntinr here, will nominate another candidate tomorrow, and an effort ef-fort will Uo made to elect. The I lev. "William 11. wtrx of Bradford. Brad-ford. Pa., also declined election as missionary mis-sionary to Liberia. The house of bishops, however, urged him to consider t lie ap-I ap-I pointment further, and tor the time be-I be-I ing withheld action. Henry P. Davison of Xew Tork City, war head of the American Red Cross, will head the laymen'e section of the committee, commit-tee, which is to have genera! direction of the nation-wide campaign of the Protestant Protes-tant Episcopal church. Associated with lum will be leading bishops, clergy and laymen of the church. The rampaign contemplates individual solicitation of the membership to awaken the church to its needs and opportunities for expansion, to cany on a great Americanization Amer-icanization work among aliens in which it is planned to cooperate with the federal fed-eral government, and to provide the means with which to carry on the campaign. cam-paign. Full membership of the new executive council will be named tomorrow. Provincial Pro-vincial representatives have so far been .named as follows: Province of the midwest. Bishop Charles P. Anderson, Chicago; province of Washington, Wash-ington, Bishop. John G. Murray, Maryland: Mary-land: province of the southwest, Dr. Z. B. Phillips, St. Tvouis; second province, consisting con-sisting of Xew York, Xew Jersey and Porto Rico. William M. Baldwin, Xew York; province of the Pacific. Bishop F. W. Keator of Olympia. Bishops Edward M. Parker. Xew Hampshire, Hamp-shire, and Charles Sumner Burch, New Tork, and Haley Ftske. Xew York, were selected as additional members of the board of missions, which will continue operative until January next. The house of depu ties concurred with the house of bishops in granting a vote in the house of bishops to suffragans, who will reecive such power at the end of three years. Bishop Charles Henry Brant of western Xew York suggested that the next convention con-vention open on the "Wednesday after the first Sunday in September, to which both houses agreed. Action was deferred on a motion by Bishop Benjamin Brewster. In the house of bishops, to ask release of all "political prisoners." On motion of Bishop IT. D. Aves of Mexico, neighborly greetings were sent to the government and people of Mexico, with expression of hopes that peace may soon be restored in that country. |
