Show PIONEER PASSES. D. YT. Til ton, one of the pioneers of Montana, died the other day at the age of SI. Mr. Tilton was a modest I and unassuming man and conducted a book store in Butt for a number of years. Yet he participated in some of the stirring incidents of the early days in the Treasure state and faithfully , chronicled events which have passed into history. If wc are correctly in- j formed he published the first newspaper ' in Montana, the Post, at Virginia city. : He also printed the first book, an accurate ac-curate account of the work of the vigilantes, vigi-lantes, written by Professor Dimsdale. It was a small volume, but it told of the capture and execution of Sheriff , Plummer, who was a road agent as well as an officer of the law. It likewise portrayed the taking off of the notorious notori-ous Slade, who had bf,pn warned to leave the country, but who did not believe be-lieve the vigilantes meant business un- 1 til he found himself standing upon the head of a barrel with a rope around i h:3 neck. Then it was too late and his pleadings to bo allowed to "hit the trail" were in vain. Mr. Tilton knew ' ' Liver- Ea ting Johnson, ' ' and other Montana celebrities of tho early sixties, and could tell many weird stories which never found their way into print.
