Show GERMAN HELMETS. Aii investigation recently conducted before an alderman of the city of Potts-ville, Potts-ville, Pennsylvania, brought to light the existence of a largo and thriving industry devoted to the manufacture of 1 1 Herman helmets. 7 ' The so-called "Gorman helmets" are reported to havo been made in big lots, and they are said to havo found a ready sale among tho gullible seekers after souvenirs souve-nirs of the war in Europe. Incidentally, it developed at tho inquiry in-quiry that genuine German helmets had become so plentiful that a carload of them, many in a broken and battered condition, vrero brought to a steel company com-pany 's mills to be melted down aa scrap-iron. Possibly the spurious "German helmets hel-mets 1 wero much more attractive to the curio hunters by reason of their newness and shininess and general ex-celleuce ex-celleuce of appearance than tho real article from abroad. At any rate, a curious situation is presented, in that in one instance large quantities of gen-uino gen-uino German helmets are reduced to scrap iron, and in the other false helmets hel-mets are eagerly bought from swindlers. No doubt there was much truth in the memorable utterance of the late Mr. Barnum when he said that the American people liked to be humbugged. |
