CONGRESSMAN TO AID RECLAMATION WORK Burton L. French of Idaho Is Enthusiastic Over Great Possibilities. Special to The Tribune. POCATELLO, Idaho, May 12. The possibilities of the Idaho Reclamation association are enlarged upon and the work, of the association given much encouragement en-couragement by Congressman Burton L. French of this state in a letter to Secretary Secre-tary Fred R. Reed of the association from Washington, D. C. Congressman French urges the association to pusn the work and be prepared to present its case at the proper time. Reasons for active work at this time were stated by the congressman con-gressman as follows: "In the first place, we need homes and more homes for our people. "At a time when the world Is a little bit out of 'joint, tho development of reclamation projects will furnish employment employ-ment that will take up the slack in labor. Again, tho plan will furninh at once opportunity for homes for our returning soldiers, and, at the same time, err. ploy -men t at a reasonable compensation for thousands of them, enabling them to get firmly upon their feet after the enormous sacrifices they have made. "And the money expended In the recla-i recla-i mation work will be a most profitable i investment. It will be profitable to the federal government, for It will increase i the wealth of the nation. It will re ; profitable, again, because it will be the t means of furnishing homes for our peo-, peo-, pie, and of increasing production of foods ' needed by the world. 1 "It Is again Important because it has to do with tho taking over of large ; propositions that the government can handle with ease, but which, In many instances, in-stances, would be beyond the possibility of being handled by the individual." An educational campaign in the ea st wi!l be one of the Important tasks of the Idaho association. A campaign to en-lien en-lien ten eastern senators and representatives representa-tives on the opportunities awaiting await-ing in the west If they will lend their support to the big reclamation appiopria-tiun appiopria-tiun bill that soon is to come up in con-, con-, gress will he undertaken. Those who are familiar with tho attitude of eastern men : in regard to reclamation in the west sav i that much opposition will be encountered j until these men are familiarized with the I needs of the wpt and the results ou-i ou-i tained from irrigation. 1 |
