Show 0W BUSH SHOWING x WELL IS SEASON Veteran Shortstop of Tigers Is Displaying Pep and Speed to Burn. The cheering news comes from the camp of the Detroit Tigers that Donie Bush, who showed sony? signs of slipping slip-ping last year, is coming back as strong as ever. Bush, says one Detroit war correspondent, cor-respondent, is starting his tenth full season with the Tigerx, showing as much pep and ability as ever, and if the draft doesn't catch him ho should have one of his best seasons. Although Donie is under uO by a couple ot vears, he is the veteran sh'ort-stop sh'ort-stop of the league. When George -lc-Bride quit the game as a regular the toga descended to Bush, and .he will likelv wear it for some time to come. Bush is in some ways the most popular popu-lar shortstop in the American league, and his throws are the kind that bring the fans up with a yell. Begardless of whether,, the runner is a fast or slow man, his throw is the same, and the ball never appears to beat the runner by JFore than a step. Donie is one of the itnost accurate peggers in the business, and few wild throws are marked up against him in a season. A few days ago a player was telling of Donie 's appearance against the White Sox in 1908, when the pennant hinged on the last series. In those games the midget raced all over the right side of the field and took grounder, flies and everything that came along. ' ' You don t go so far now as you used to, do youl" inquired the speaker of Bush. ''Don't have to," was the quick retort re-tort on the part of the shortstop. And in this remark Bush told a lot. Prior to the coming of Vitt and Young, Bush used to range over the whole infield, but since his two partners started with the Tigers he trusts them to take anything that conies in .their direction. di-rection. Incidentally, it may be remarked re-marked that this trio forms one of the best defensive infields in the business. Because of his size and ability to hit from either side of the plate, Bush is a terror for pitchers to face. He gets on base as often as any man in the league, and is always one of the leading run getters. This year he will be dropped from the lead-off position, but Jennings has important work planned for him. With a speed merchant like Dressen on base, Bush can be of great value because of his ability to bunt, and sending Dressen down will be one of his chief duties. Oscar Stallage claims that he would not be able to . stop as many hit and run plays if it were not for Bush. "He is a wonder in getting them at second, aid in giving credit don't overlook DpDie, " was the way the catcher put it. |
