Show AHNUAl FRAY? Football Game Between Branches of Service May Again Be Staged. BOTH TEAMS. EAGER FOR YEARLY MATCH Public Turns to Secretaries Baker and Daniels for a Decision, The situation at the Naval academy in regard to tho playing of the football game between its team and that of the Military academy is peculiar. There is no doubt that the midshipmen are wild to have the game played, and it is hard to find an officer who will not a.dmit unofficially that there are no special reasons why it should not be played, but no move can be made from either institution. If the Same is to be played, and the time is approaching rapidly when it must bo settled set-tled one way or the other, it must be done on the initiative of the secretaries of war and the navy, and there can be no official suggestion to that effect. At the outbreak of the war athletic contests with outside teams were stopped at both service schools. Later the inhibition inhi-bition was modified to the extent of permitting per-mitting a enrtaiied schedule in all branches, but the service teams were directed di-rected to pby all games on the borne eronds. This, cf i-our.. prevents Lite annual foot nail game in New York or any oth---r pin re. ev:n Annapolis or West Point, as in that ease one team would have to leave its own grounds. The officials of-ficials of the service schools would rot think of s-jETestir-g to the secretaries that iV'v should abrogate jhis rule. However, How-ever, those who wi & h to see the game nlaycd would bo giad if the meaner could be taken up at h e a d c u a r t e r ? . Benefits for Red Cross. Both service teams will "be - strong this year, and uhe Naval academy believes that it will have the best in its history. Gilmour Doble did wonderful work with the squad last year, his first with the Navy team, and will return for the coming com-ing season. Three good men have been lost by graduation, but there is every reason that the improvement of the old men and the new material in the new oiass will insure a stronger team than ever. New Material Promising, Of the regular backfleld, Martin has graduated, but Ingram, Roberts and Butler But-ler are still in the academy. WhelcheL quarter of the 1916 team, is also on hand. However, he is somewhat light for Do-bie's Do-bie's system of play, the- miracle coaching coach-ing running every play from direct pass, and using men of good weight, as well as speed and activity, for all the positions in the backrield. There are a number of promising backfield candidates in the new class, including Howe Crawford, a half at the University of. Pennsylvania last season. Goodstein, center, and Von Heimberg, end, are the men who are gone from the line. Foster and Arthur played the former for-mer position a portion of the time and are still in the academy. Tackles and guards from last year's squad who are still available are Schilrihauer, Scaffe, Cold well and Willkie. Penfeld, guard of the 1S16 team, has re-entered the academy. acad-emy. The new class has several men be- I tween 190 and 200 pounds who will join : the squad, including McCandless, Morgan, : "Wallace and Cristal. For ends there are Even and Graves of last year and many promising youngsters. |
