Show CllOli OE HE HELDjltJOOiCIOOS Change of name of the A merican Institute In-stitute of Mining Engineers has been ap-provecl'by ap-provecl'by the. board of directors, and a proposal to that effect will be submitted Co members' at an early date, says the Mining and Scientific Press. The name is to be changed by inserting "and metallurgical" metal-lurgical" before the word "engineers." The idea is to be more specific and comprehensive, compre-hensive, but the effort made to recognize the inclusion of metallurgists has the immediate im-mediate effect of excluding chemists and geologists, among others, for theee are neither mining nor metallurgical engi- neers. j We cannot see any advantage in the i change of name; on the contrary, we see several disadvantages, besides the one ; to which we have referred. Another Is ; the fact that the present name lias served for nearly half a century and has become ! honorably known all over the world. A third is the greater probability of confusion confu-sion with the Mining and Metallurgical society of America, which exist s to do the tilings tiiat the institute docs not care to do. and servos as a nucleus of disaffection whenever the institute needs discipline. |
