By Robert Brannori Wesitvcrd the course of empire takes its way; The four f.rst acts already pest, A f.f'.h shall close the drama with the day; Tiye's noblest offspring is the lest. ' 1TTITH these lines Bishop Berkley, cow nearly two centuries ago, closed his "Verses on the Prospect of Planting Arts and Learning in America." Amer-ica." He wss America's -first prophet. For he. with large vision and with the eye of strong religious faith, beheld the wonderful work of Almighty God. which was to be in this vast virgin continent of the Western Hemisphere. Ee saw rising under the providence of ! Gcd a mighty nation designed by the j Great Ruler of the universe to accom- pliih His end in the government of the world. A nation JTer -men shall not impose for , ' truth and sense The pedantry of courts and schools There shall be sung another golden age, The rise of empire and of arts; The good and great inspiring j epic-age; fle wisest heaa3 and noblest hearts. H Kot such as Europe breeds in her decay; Such as she bred when fresh and young, jT7.en heavenly fame did animate ; her clay By future poet3 shall be sung." Such was tie nation Berkley saw In his vision in 1730 -while walking on the beach at Xewport. R. I., In deep meditation on the purpose of God concerning con-cerning this continent. For George Berkley had a profound faith in God and In His sacred word. To him the existence of God and of the kingdom which He sent His Eon to found upon the earth were as real and as evident as his own being. Like St. Paul, he was able to see "the invisible things of God from the creation." Through-cut Through-cut the whole history of the human race he could trace God's hand work-' work-' Ing out His will as revealed to man in j the Scriptures, and He could Eee God in the world about him as clearly as i he could see man. j Ee believed with all the strength of his mind and soul that God governs i the world which He made. From the book of Daniel he had j learned the purpose of God with regard to not only the powers of this world, but with regard to the establishment upon the earth of His own kingdom. Tse four world kingdoms revealed to Daniel by God had come into the world in the order named and with the character therein given to each. These kingdoms were the Babylonian, the Persian, the Grecian and the Roman, and as kingdom succeeded kingdom the power of empire moved westward There li to be no fifth world kingdom among men. N Pot the fourth kingdom Is to en-j en-j j?re In its parts until God overthrows j earthly power and brings the na tions under the power of His own kingdom, which is to be an everlasting everlast-ing kingdom. But two great world . events are connected with the fourth kingdom of Daniel. The first is, that j during the days of its power God will set up on the earth a kingdom which 'hall never be destroyed. That Prophecy was fulfilled with the comas' com-as' of His Son in the days of Augustus Augus-tus Caesar, and the giving by Him to the world of the gospel of the kingdom king-dom of God. All these things Berkley Berk-ley knew, and he knew that the Eu-roPe Eu-roPe of his day was made up of the ' broken fragment of the P.oman Em-Sire, Em-Sire, which was the fourth kingdom. But the second zreat world event connected with the fourth kingdom S'hlch Daniel prophesied had not yet transpired. And while Berkley does Et seem to have had a due regard t0 the Importance of that event, in I dc!aring "the four first acts already ! Wst," yet in his vision of God's pur-, pur-, Pcse with regard to America he seems almost to have been inspired. At the I he was looking into the future ,yr-i beholding in his mind in this r Western world what we see today in feallty-a mighty nation of free men such as Europe bred. "When fresh an,5 young, when heavenly flame did j JUmate her clay," there was in the """h of Europe a small power which '. Tas destined to rise with America and to fulfill the prophecy of Daniel, concerning con-cerning the second great world event connected with the fourth kingdom. ' For Daniel says that "ten kings" shall arise out of the fourth kingdom "and another shall rise after them, and ho shall be diverse from the first and shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great things against tho most High and shall wear out the saints of the most High and think to change times and laws." Xo event in history had fulfilled that prophecy concerning the ten kings and the one diverse in Berkley's Berk-ley's day, but the power was thero on earth in its infancy In tho small kingdom of Prussia- Today as we see America fulfilling the vision of Berkley Berk-ley we also see Prussia fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel. For "Wilhelm II is the tenth king of Prussia, counting from and including includ-ing the Great Elector. The ono that came up among them and which is diverse from the first is the German Emperor. And this German Emperor has subdued or absorbed the three last Kings of Prussia. It is this German Ger-man Emperor also that has "the mouth which speaketh great things." And Germany, over which he rules, is not only a part of, but prides itself on being the successor to the power of the Roman Empire. For this German Ger-man Emperor, under the eagles of the old Roman Empire, has organized organ-ized a military power greater than any that has ever appeared upon the earth And true to the prophecy, he has blasphemed God and has made war upon the saints. His armies have been victorious as it was prophesied" they would be. but his end is destruction. destruc-tion. "For the ships of Chittem shall come against him and he shall be grieved." says Daniel "He shall come to his end and none shall helthim." God. who from the creation foresaw and foreknew all thing3 in all time is always prepared Before he was formed in his mother's womb He knew Wilhelm II and He had reared in America a 'nation to do His will concerning that monarch. For he is the last world power that shall arise. "The judgment shall tit," says DanieL "and they shall take away his domin ion, to consume and destroy It unto the end. And the kingdom and dominion domin-ion and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting ever-lasting kingdom, and all dominion shall serve and obey Him." And it is of this kingdom, the kingdom king-dom of God, the fifth and last kingdom, king-dom, that Berkley sang in those immortal im-mortal lines. For it was his religious conviction of the truth of God's promises prom-ises that inspired him to declare: A fifth shall close the drama with the day ; Time's noblest offspring Is the last. It must be evident to any reflecting mind that Berkley did not mean that America was to close the whole drama of life upon the earth or that America was to be time's last offspring. To hold such a view or to give the lines such an Interpretation would be contrary con-trary to all Berkley's convictions. He knew that God had said that He would make His kingdom the fifth and last kingdom upon the earth and he believed be-lieved the word of God. It is from the word of God that he takes his idea of the five acts of the drama. The first four kingdoms of Daniel have risen in the world, and the fifth is in the world, but not of it; therefore he says: The four first acts already past, A fifth shall close the drama with the day. With what day? There is but one day that is to close this drama upon the earth, and that is the day of the Lord. It is with His day that the fifth kingdom shall come in power, and that kingdom is Berkley's fifth and closing act of the drama and also "time's noblest offspring," for it is to be the last and is to endure forever. What Berkley did see in vision in this western world was a great nation of free men animated by heavenly flame, which under God would be instrumental instru-mental in preparing the way for the coming of His kingdom. And what Berkley saw with the eye of faith wo see today as a reality. II When God will place His kingdom over all the dominions of the world ii known to no man.. That is, the hour, nor the day, nor the year is known to no man. But God, "who declares tho end from the beginning." decreed that it shall be, and we know from the experience of the world that God's decrees are irrevocable. Because He f is eternal He lb patient; but His judg- merits ate unfailing as are His prom ises. Passing by the flood and His early judgments upon the Israelites, we know that Babylon had long been in the condition that Isaiah and Jeremiah said it would be; we know that Tyre and Egypt had been long in the condition which Ezeklel foretold; fore-told; we know that the four world kingdoms of Daniel appeared in the world as he foretold they would; we know that God sent His Son to the earth to found His kingdom as foretold fore-told by Daniel; we know that Jerusalem and the Jewish people have long been In the condition whicli God's Son said they would be as a punishment punish-ment for rejecting Him whom God had sent to them according tOj His promise. Each of these things was foretold by God and all have come to pass. And every man is able to inform himself whether the prophets and the Son of God spoke truly or not when they prophesied in the name of the Lord. With all this evidence that God does in His own time execute His judgments and fulfill His promise, what ground is there for believing that lie will not keep His promise to send his Son to the world again in power and glory to rule over all the nations of the earth? Every true Christian believes that He will so come. His daily prayer is "Thy kingdom come." and the creed which' he recites declares his belief that Christ "sitteth at the right hand of God, tho Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead." And this belief is founded not alone on the prophecy of Daniel, for it has also for its basis the words . of the Lord Himself. That is, the Son of God verified the word of His Father as written by Daniel. For He who gave up all of the riches and glory of heaven and came into the world to be born In a stable, with a manger for His cradle; who made Hs habitation with the poor, while He gave to the world the gospel of the kingdom of God, declared that He would come again to the earth accompanied accom-panied by his angel armies and overthrow over-throw the dominion of the kingdoms of the world And it was He who said, when foretelling the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of worldly dominion: This gospel of the kingdom king-dom shall be preached in all the world as a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come. "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven but Wy Father only. But as the days of Xoe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking-, ma trying and giving in marriage, until the day that Xoo entered into the Ark, and knew not until the flood camo and took them all away; so shall also the coining of the Son of Man be. For they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He shall send His angels with a great sound of trumpet and Lhey shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heaven to the other." It is now nearly nineteen centuries since those words were spoken at Jerusalem Jeru-salem by the Son of God. Xo time was fixed for His coming in power unl glory, for He says none savo only His Father knows tho day and the hour; but He does say that it will not be until "the gospel of the kingdom ahall have been preached in all tho world as a witness unto all nations." And through all tho centuries that have Intervened since He gave that gospel to His disciples to preach to all the world, successive generations of men born into the kingdom of God have carried on the work, until today there is .no nation on the earth to which that gospel has not been preached. The Son of God did not say that all nations of the world would accept the gospel of the kingdom of God. What He said was that it should be "preached In all the world as a witness unto all nations of His ultimate purpose pur-pose with regard to the salvation of the souls of men and to tho final governmental gov-ernmental power on the whole earth. The gospel of the kingdom is not now c:' this world. It is of God and it is of grace. It is God's gift to man. It is His witness to man of His mercy and goodness, and to all who believe the witness and accept of His gift It is eternal life. But if man resists the grace of God and refuses to accept His gift, that is no more loss to God "than the sun shining on desert places or among people who shut their eyes." God is still the fountain of grace even as the sun is still the sun. And His dispensation of grace and favor which now has been extended to the world for nearly nineteen centuries is araw-iug- to an end, for it has been carried to all the world. The nations have heard His witness of iiis kingdom and have had the freedom free-dom of choice between It and the powers pow-ers of tliis; world. Xo matter v. hat man may say, God's final judgment will not fall upon the world without repeated re-peated warnings having been given by Him to His cliiltUau. Fh W through the centuries, when they have forgotten forgot-ten him and gone after false gods. He has by distresses and desolations recalled re-called them from their inio.uities even as He did the Israelites of old. In His mercy He has let His judgment judg-ment falKat intervals, leaving space for repentance. But man in his anity and pride has insisted that he is much wiser than God, and he has persisted in treating with contempt tho witness which God gave unto him and has set up systems of his own devising in which he denies the very existence of God. So that, while the gospel of the kingdom has been preached to all the world, we do not find that the world has believed the witness of God. But this unbelief does not affect the truth of the testimony testi-mony of the witness, nor does it shorten the arm of the Lord. "God still sits in His heaven and looks down upon all of the Inhabitants of the earth" and awaits His day. When that day, which is certain, Ehall be He only knows. But we know that the time ap-proacheth ap-proacheth when He shall "shake not only the earth but the heavens" and "the Son of Man shall come upon a cloud in power and great glory." For the ten kings of Daniel have arisen out of the fourth kingdom and the one diverse who !s to be the last world power Is now battling for world dominion. "The gospel of the kingdom" king-dom" hat; been "preached to all the world as a witness unto all rations." These were conditions which God decreed should ante-date the final triumph of His kingdom upon the ruins of all earthly power. The conditions con-ditions have been fulfilled and the day of the Lord is near. The men who laughed at Noah building the Ark have their counterpart today upon the earth. But the flood did come and Xoah and his family were saved. And just as surely will the Son of Man come in power and gather his elect from the four quarters of the heaven and rule over His kingdom upon the earth. They therefore who point to the whole world at w-ar as proof of the failure of the gospel of the kingdom of God do but shut their eyes to the light which God hath given mankind in His word. This war is no more a proof of the failure of that gospel than was the crucifixion of its founder a proof of its failure. ( The Jews thought that they had destroyed the kingdom and the gospel when they pur Christ to death. They only destroyed thenjselves. For the destruction of their temple and their city quickly followed. That the gentile world at the beginning begin-ning of the w-ar had become ahncsi as unbelieving as the Jews were at the time of Christ does not imply that the gospel of the kingdom has failed. It implies no more than that the gentile world had become as spiritually blind as the Jews were when the Saviour was on earth. If they, the Jews, have suffered for their unbelief shall not the gentiles also suffer for the same sin? The gospel says they shall. It has not failed. It is still the witness of the kingdom king-dom of God, and never did witness give truer testimony than that gospel gos-pel gives of the things which we see today. For in these days, which Christ foresaw and foretold, He said: "Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall grow cold. But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. For then shall be great tribulation such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no nor ever shall be. And except ex-cept those days should be shortened, there should be no flesh saved; but for the elect's sake, those days shall bo shortened.". Who shall say that the gospel of the Kingdom of God has failed when Its founder so clearly foresaw and foretold the unbelief of the world and Us consequences? But He has promised that these days shall be shortened for the elect's sake. And it is here in this western world that God has reared a nation which is as surely the forerunner of His kingdom as John the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ. For in this nation He lias mingled tho blood of many nations and fused the various races into one people under one flag and one Government, typifying the oneness of the whole world that Is to be under His kingdom. It is this people, drawn mainly from the nations which now comprise the parts of the fourth kingdom, and united by the spirit of God into one nation, v, hich goes forth in His name to overcome the powers of darkness in the wcrll and to lead the nations of the earth to the light. Out of this western world comes God's instrument to fulfil! His promise that "these days shall l.e shortened for the elect's sake." For now is come to pass the word of God as spoken to Isaiah: "They Ehall fear the name of the Lord from the west, and the glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come like a flood the spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. And the Redeemer shall come to Zion." Is it not true? Are we not hearing from all sources that tho enemy does "fear the name of the Lord from the west"? And it is not a misapplication misapplica-tion of the scripture to apply that saying to this time, for Isaiah was speaking of a far distant time. And these times do fulfil! that prophecy. For, when after the fail of Russia "the enemy came like a flood" to the fields of France, the spirit of the Lord raised up the American standard against them. Two weeks before the battle broke in March God illuminated the whole of the heavens above the northern portion of America with a marvelous light, which took the form and colors of an American flag, v. hose ' gigantic folds waved triumphantly in the skies to the amazement of all who beheld His handiwork-Scientists handiwork-Scientists cahed it a wonderful display dis-play of the aurora borealis. but ttiey could give no explanation of its unexpected unex-pected appearance or of its remarkable remark-able reproduction of the flag. But aa God made the heavens as well as the earth, and as the light is His, and as He speaketh to man by His works as well as by His word, it Is neither presumptuous pre-sumptuous nor superstitious to believe that He on that night gave to this nation the sign of His approval of its purpose In entering the war for its encouragement en-couragement to go forth to victory in His name beneath that standard which he tset in the heavens. "And the Redeemer shall come to Zion." It is God's decree. For from the foundation of the world He hath determined that Christ shall not have died in vain; that His kingdom shall triumph over all the powers of this world; that He, with power "like the glory from the rising of the sun," shall come "again to the earth and that all nations shall be subject to Him. The Herald of the Dawn fTlHE day of Christ is dawning after centuries of war. His rising kingdom streaks tho sky above the seas of gore, America, beholds the light and heralds to the world, Our God is God of Peace. Her feet are swift to do 'His will, H9 doth her soul renew. He makes her strong to do the work He raised her up to do, For through her life His purpose runs . to set the nations free. Our God gives Liberty. Her mighty hosts are marching to ths battlecry of peace, Her banners all are blazoned war for- evermore must cease, Her soul with' love doth flame for ' every nationality. Our God doth lead her on. She goes forth to bring the nations to the mountain of the Lord, Where they shall beat to plowshares every cannon, every sword. And nevermore on earth shall man be taught the art of war. Our God has pledged His w ord. Then even- man shall unafraid sit underneath un-derneath his vine. And earth shall blossom 'neath a rule transeendently benign, For all the nations of the world shall walk in God's great name. Our God will keep his word. And when in pow'r and glory comes the Lord upon the cloud, With all his angel armies singing joyously joy-ously and loud, America will hail the day and ioin the angel paean. Our God is Lord of all.'
