Show PACKERS' VAULT RAIDED BY HENEY Examination of Seized Papers Pa-pers Then Halted by Order Or-der of Federal Court. Chicago, Feb. 6. Armed with a search warrant issued by Federal Judge Landis. Francis J. Heney, attorney for the federal trade commission, today raided the vault of Henry Veeder, general gen-eral counsel for Swift & Co., and seized hundreds of letters, records and documents docu-ments for use in th'e federal investigation investiga-tion of the packing industries. The search oE the vault continued until proceedings were halted by a stay order or-der issued by Judge Landis at the request re-quest of Attorney John J. Healy, counsel coun-sel for Mr. Veeder. Judge Landis will hear arguments tomorrow on .Mr. Veeder's petition to stay proceedings, under the search warrant. war-rant. .Swift & Co.'s counsel made an unsuccessful unsuc-cessful .attempt to prevent the removal of a suitcase filled with letters from Attorney Veeder's vault. Attorney Veeder insisted that the documents be left in the vault until an opportunity had been had to appear before Judge Landis. Objection also was made to the form of the receipt given by the federal officials of-ficials for the papers taken. The letters let-ters were taken to United States District Dis-trict Attorney Charles F. Clyne's office in the federal building, but Judge Landis' Lan-dis' temporary order directed that no further examination be made of the documents until the hearing in court is concluded. Deputy United Plates marshals are in cjiarge of the Swift & Co. vault tonight. |
