Show Hail to the Chief! WHEN Governor Bamberger said. "I think Martin Mulvey would make a good chief of police,'' the Tribune echoed. "Mr Mulvey would make an ideal chief of police. ' The combination made a special effort to put Mr. Mulvey over as the official representative of reform and they went out of their way to "get" Parley White, who has made an excellent record as chief of police and who holds the respect, and confidence of men and women who are working for a clean city. The game was being worked openly for the state house political ring to control city appointments as well as those of Salt Lake county and because A. H. Crabbe, flatly refused re-fused to walk the plank and put the skids under Chief White he is charged with being a traitor to the cause. This traitor charge is becoming quite common. It is generally applied to any. person in public or private life who refuses to play politics according to the rules laid down by the Democratic, machine. A. H. Crabbe is entitled en-titled to, and is receiving, the congratulations of all people who believe in the square deal and fair play for the stand he took in the police chief controversy. He knew nothing against Parley White and he knew of no better man to take the place. Consequently he voted for White, The Tribune's efforts to show that Salt Lake is not a fit place to live simply because it failed to name a chief of police, will not meet with approval among people who know conditions and think for themselves. From a moral standpoint. Salt Lake has a much better record than many cities of the west. Conditions are not perfect and there is room for improvement here as elsewhere, but Mr. White has worked earnestly arid capably to keep the city clean and we feel quite sure the police department depart-ment is entirely safe in his hands. Commissioner Scheid has made it quite plain that he stands for strict law enforcement and he has said Parley White measures up to his standard as a police chief. Therefore we believe be-lieve the parties who failed in their efforts to name a police chief may rest assured that the city's welfare is still in safe hands. Hail to the chief! T. |
