G. i Lieutenants Griffiths and Wallace Selected for Important Position. The personnel work, involving the untiring un-tiring efforts of a clerical corps whose duty it is to compile personal records of the hundreds of applicants -for admission in the S. A. T. C. at the University of Utah this year, is under the able direction direc-tion of Lieutenant James R. Griffiths, adjutant, and Lieutenant J. Wallace West, assistant adjutant. Both officers received commissions after a period of intensive training at the . Presidio, S-an Francisco, Cal., during the past three months, where they were assigned to serve at the state institution upon the initiation of an army unit October 1. , Lieutenant Griffiths, widely known throughout the state as a competent physical director, has for, the past several sev-eral years been connected with physical education work at the "U." Last year he was in charge of all such work at the university and was sent with a contingent of university students and faculty members mem-bers to receive military training at the Presidio early last July. After successfully success-fully passing the infantry officers' examination ex-amination September 16, Lieutenant Griffiths Grif-fiths attended a military school of personnel per-sonnel instruction, later being assigned to the University of Utah as adjutant of that branch. Previous to his enlistment, Lieutenant West was athletic coach at the Tooele high school. Entering the training camp at the Presidio last spring, and receiving receiv-ing practically the same drill as Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Griffiths, he was commissioned second lieutenant and assigned to serve as assistant personnel adjutant at the university. The work of this department has been specified by the government to conre under un-der six heads accounting, information section, record taking, assignment, trade tests, and allotments; Briefly, this department de-partment is responsible for a personal history of each man of its respective detachment, de-tachment, in. the service and out. Aside from handling the business of, obtaining ! a competent release of memebrs of the S. A. T. C- applicants, it has already examined ex-amined more than 500 student-soldiers, who are now awaiting official induction. |
