IS KILLEy ACTION Son of Mrs. E. O. Howard Dies While Leading Charge in Battle. From wounds received in battle, while leading his company on to victory, Capt. James B. Austin, son of Mrs. Fj. O. Howard, How-ard, 1219 East South Temple .street, died in France. October 9 or 10, according to telegraphic information received yesterday yester-day by the parents of the young man in this city. He was a member of General Jickman's comma nd. the Thirty-eighth : regiment. Third division, infantry. Captain Austin was born in Kansas City, Mo., thirty-two years ago. He received his early education in the puhlie schools of Salt .Lake, and choosing mining as a profession, attended the Michigan State School of Mines at Houghton, where he remained for two years. Me attended tho Second officers', training camp at Fort Sheridan. 111., and- upon leaving that camp a year ago was commissioned com-missioned first lieutenant. From Fort Sheridan he was sent to Camp Greene. , N. C, where he remained during the 'winter of J!tlT-18, and iu March was ordered overseas. He won the commission commis-sion of captain while on active duty, and later was recommended for a commission com-mission as major for staff duty, which, it was learned later, lie declined, believing believ-ing that his duty was with his regiment and companv. which he refused to leave , so close tu the battle line. At the time C;i plain Austin went lo the ! officers' training camp he was in busi-! busi-! n ess in Chicago. In June. 1!)l!i, lie was married to Miss Frminie Calvin, daughter daugh-ter of F. I-;. Calvin, president of Ihe Union Pacific railroad. lie is survived bv his wife and two children, who aro with Mr. and Mrs. Calvin in Omaha. |
