Show FATAL CRASH ' IN HYDROPLANE Two Killed, Two Hurt as Machine Dashes Into Building. NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 13. Two enlisted men were instantly killed and two ensigns en-signs Injured today when a large hydro-airplane hydro-airplane crashed into the Wllloughby club on Willoughby spit, about twelve miles from the city. The dead are: JONES of Gadwn, Ala. ALEXANDER of New York City. Enelgn Robert Palmedo, who was piloting pilot-ing the machine, escaped v'lth a fractured leg. Ensign David Thomas sustained Blight injuries to the back. Quartermaster Quartermas-ter W. V. Avery, wireless operator, was uninjured. The hydroairplane was one -of the largest larg-est in use by the navy and was equipped with two powerful motors. The machine, with five aboard, left Baltimore at 10 o'clock this morning for a run to the Hampton Roads naval base and return. At the head of the bay the pilot lost his way in the dense fog and mist overhanging overhang-ing the coast and was forced to land in order to obtain bis location. The machine ma-chine was successfully dropped in the water wa-ter near the scene of the accident. A few minutes later the flight was resumed, with the head pointed shoreward. Emerging Emerg-ing from a mist bank, the machine plunged nose first into the club building. The machine crumbled in the wreckage of the roof and veranda. Jones and Alexander Alex-ander were caught under the motors and crushed to death. |
