Show LOOT RESTORED. Germany has been compelled, in conformity con-formity with (he terms of the armistice, to give up the gold forcibly taken from the Russians, and more than $60,000,000 has arrived in Paris and been deposited depos-ited in the Bank of France, where it has been credited to the common account ac-count of the allies. It is perhaps fortunate for-tunate that so much gold escaped the clutches of Lenine and Trotzky and their fellow anarchists, but it is highly improbable that the money will be returned re-turned to Russia. The British, French and Belgians hold vast amounts of Russian Rus-sian securities upon which no interest has been paid for some time. In fact, the Bolshevist government has repudiated repudi-ated all obligations save the debts contracted con-tracted since they came into power. So the allies will bo fully justified in retaining possession of the $60,000,000 and putting it to the best possible use. The " Germans also extorted large sums of gold from the Belgian towns and banks which will have to be returned. As the robbers probably spent tho money obtained from this source, they will undoubtedly be compelled com-pelled to tap their reserve stock of gold in order to make good. Had the Huns been victorious they would have seized all the gold upon which they could lay their hands, and if their own stock of the yellow metal is taken to pay for some of the destruction wrought by their armies they will have no cause for complaint, although such action would leave them practically powerless to engage in trade with foreign nations. |
