OGDEN, Nov. 19. John Seaman, S5 years of age, pioneer of the state and known to aimost every man in Utah, died at his home, 70(5 Twenty-first street, at 7 o'clock this morning, following a brief attack of pneumonia. Although it was known that Mi Seaman had been in failing health for the past year, his death today was unexpected by his scores of friends in Ogden. It was the second attack of pneumonia he had suffered within the past year. Born in Ithaca, N. Y., December 18, 1H32, Mr. Seaman spent the early years of his life in the Empire state. Due to the death of his father, he was compelled com-pelled to obtain -his education through his own efforts. At the age of 19 years h e moved to El ush i ng, Mich . , but soon decided to seek his fortune in the far west. Joining the Bartlett ilrown company com-pany at Council Bluffs, Iowa, he arrived in Salt Lake City in August, IS54. First settling at Centerville, Mr. Seaman Sea-man was married to Susannah Stevens Brown in lb'nri. In later years the family moved to Morgan county, where Mr. Seaman held the public offices of tax assessor as-sessor and tax collector. Coming to Ogden Og-den in 1S75, the pioneer engaged In the lumber business and organize! the Utah & Oregon Lumber company in 1SH0. During his many years' residence in Ogdcn and 'Weber county Mr. Seaman held many positions po-sitions of honor and trust in both a political po-litical and religious capacity. For several sev-eral years he was counsellor to Bishop E. W. Wade of the Pleasant View ward. During his residence in Ogden he served as county commissioner and state senator. Always active in the interests of the Democratic party in Utah, Mr. Seaman was accorded the greatest honor of his life in the 1 9 1 1 election, when he was selected as one of the four presidential presi-dential electors to represent Utah in the electoral college. Mrs. Seaman died in this city on April 22, 1913. The surviving sons and daughters daugh-ters are Mrs. Mary S. Tagrg'ar t of Black Pine, Idaho, Mrs. Joanna D. Cragun of this city, George A. Seaman of Morgan county, and Miss Josephine Seaman, principal of the Lorin Farr school in this city. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon, after-noon, with services in the Fourth ward meeting house at 1 o'clock. Interment in Ogden City cemetery. |
