Show 1G WITS PEACE WITH M, VENIZELOS Greek Emperor Is Declared to Have Sought Leader's Return as Premier. ATHENS, via Rome, Jan. 4, 1:15 p. m. The king of the Greeks appears to have considerably altered his viewpoint in the last month. Speaking to the Associated Press correspondent today on the present situation in Greece, the king, while re-Iterating- his determination not to he forced or persuaded to abandon neutrality, neutral-ity, no longer spoke of demobilization, and seemed to be willing to allow the allies al-lies to remain in Saloniki until the end of the war. On good authority it is asserted that M. Venizelos has twice been approached with respect to the terms on which he would accept the premiership, and he Is said lo have renised to consider the proposal at the present time on the ground that Greece would now be unable to be of any practical assistance to t he entente powers pow-ers beyond what it. is already doing. He, however, left, the matter open for further fur-ther discussion, presumably in the spring, when Greece's aid may be valuable. Even those in royal circles begin to admit that Greece may be forced sooner or later to join the entente, although they cling to the hope that this may be put off as long as possible. Despite the efforts of both sides, the equivocal situation situa-tion in Macedonia as the result of the presence of the allied armies constantly gives rise to annoyance, of which advantage advan-tage is being taken by the various influences. influ-ences. The recent demonstration on M. Ven-izelos's Ven-izelos's Saint 's day, as well as the fact that the Gounaris majority in the last elections has not yet ventured to demand the formation of a Gounaris cabinet, is considered indicative of the popular desire de-sire that M. Yenizelos be returned to power In place of the present cabinet, which is not in harmony. The stringent censorship on all telegrams tele-grams for political purposes has already been the cause of two joint representations representa-tions by the entente diplomats to the government. |
