The audience cheered a nd ap-plauJed ap-plauJed the great actress fully ten minutes min-utes before permitting her to speak. At the close she was called before the curtain cur-tain seven times, while the Coliseum rang with shouts of "Vive 1' France!" "Vive Bernhardt!" and "Vive les allies!" While the enthusiasm was at its height the orchestra or-chestra struck up the "Ma rseilla ise," in which the whole audience joined. Critics agree that Mme. Fernhardt's Interpretation In-terpretation of the role of the cathedral of Stn'Sburg was beyond praise and was one of the most brilliant successes of her long stage career. |
