Show WIDTSOE ADDRESSES' UNIVERSITY FACULTY New President of the Institution Tells Teachers of His Hopes for the Future. At the first meeting of the faculty of the University of Utah for the present school year Dr. John A. Widtsoe, the new president of tlie institution, delivered deliv-ered an interesting and inspiring address. ad-dress. Dr. Widtsoe said that all of the faculty must realize the wonderful future fu-ture that awaits the university. Population Popula-tion and state wealth considered, Dr. Widtsoe said, he doubted that any institution in-stitution in the country was better provided pro-vided for or more largely attended. The problem of the faculty, he said, was how to respond most wisely and effectively ef-fectively to the wishes and needs of the people in building a university of public service with the money and good will at hand. In placing before tlie students, as tlie university' develops, the knowledge knowl-edge accumulated by the world, he said, the faculty should not be prejudiced against the knowledge of the past because be-cause it is old nor against recent discoveries dis-coveries because they are new. To make education develop good character, char-acter, Dr. Widtsoe suggested, was the largest responsibility placed on teachers. He counseled friendly and appreciative understanding of each other's aims and efforts and he suggested that the happiest hap-piest and most useful person was one who minded and magnified his own business. Dr. Widtsoe said tlie institution owed its first allegiance to the state and he hoped to see it enter into tlie very life of the state, to help solve its problems, to point its way, to help bear its burdens, bur-dens, as well as to share in its prosperity. pros-perity. ' At the faculty meeting Dean W. 1-1. Deary was appointed a member of the athletic, council, succeeding Dr. J, P. Merrill, who had resigned from the council. |
