Show UTAH PLUMBERS 1 BROUGHHO TRIAL All Day Is Consumed in Securing Se-curing Jury in Federal Fed-eral Court. All of yesterday was consumed in the Federal eourt, .Judge Tillman IX .Johnson .John-son presiding, in examining talesmen, who will pass upon the facts as presented pre-sented in the matter of the Cnited ytates against a number of plumbers charged with violation of the Sherman anti trust law. The accused men are Chris Irving. Charles .J. Higsoii, William S. Highnm, Foster V. .Ioiicb, .John A. Korsvih, Will Hoes, Henry Green, .lames Macbeth. A. .1. Atkin, William Kossj-ter. Kossj-ter. Parlov G. James and V. G. Carlhev, Salt Lake plumbers and members mem-bers of the Association of Master Plumbers Plumb-ers of Salt Lake, with the exception of Irvinu, who is a Denver man, and Atkin and Slacbeth, who are of Ogden. The original indictment also included the names of Irving M. Higley and Koy Spencer, botli of this city, but upon motion of District Attorney Kay, pre-ceding pre-ceding the commencement of the trial, the indictments against them were dismissed. dis-missed. The talesnieu were subjected to close questioning bv District Attorney Ray tor the government and E. B. Critc.hlow, chief counsel for tho defense. Mr. Critchlow is being assisted by L. C. Bovle of Kansas City. A ripple of daughter passed through the court room when oue of the prospective pros-pective jurors, 0. A. Covey, secretary of the Covey Apartment company of Salt Lake, told of his friendship lor one of the defendants, F. G. Carthey, and the possibility of being biased by reason thereof, concluding by saying "I certainly cer-tainly would not give him any the worst of it." Mr. Covey was excused on his statement that he could not possibly pos-sibly be impartial. On account of sickness in his family Harry Ostler was excused. John Holt, a contractor, and E. W. Clark, a mining man of Ophir, -were .also excused. I Among the taJesmen summoned were George O. Relf, manager of the Hotel Utah, and H. O. Godwin, assistant general gen-eral freight agent of the Oregon Short Line. . The hearing will continue this morning. morn-ing. The government 's interests are being looked after by District Attorney W. V. Ray, Assistant District Attorney David S. Cook, George H. Murdock, special investigator in-vestigator of the department of justice, and Leon Bone, special agent of the department de-partment of justice. |
