Show SUTHERLAND SAYS OUTLOOK IS BRIGHT Believes Most of New England Eng-land and Central States Will Be for Hughes. MAINE IS DOUBTFUL Senator Will Open His Campaign in Utah Next Week. The outlook for the Republican party in the national campaign is particularly bricht in the New England and central states, according to information gleaned from members of the American LJar association as-sociation by Senator George Sutherland. Senator Sutherland returned yesterday j from Chicago, where he attended the an-j an-j nual convention of the American liar as-s'.iation as-s'.iation and where he was signally honored hon-ored by being elect ud president of the organization for the ensuing year. "I did not have un opportunity to go into the political situation to any great extent." Senator Sin herland said yesterday, yester-day, "but, of course, 1 talked politics witli various members of the bar association asso-ciation from all sections of the United States. From them T gathered that all New England, including New York and Pennsylvania, with the possible exception of Maine, will go Republican at the na- j tional election. Maine seems on the doubtful list, as well as Indiana, Wisconsin Wiscon-sin and Missouri. Question as to Maine. "Politics in the east is only luke-warm as yet. That part of the country dates the campaign from tlie Maine election. While most Republicans I talked to expressed ex-pressed the belief that Maine will be safely Republican, there seems to be no certainty. In Wisconsin certain conditions condi-tions exist that make the result doubtful, doubt-ful, and Missouri and Indiana have been so close In recent campaigns that they may go cither way." Senator Sutherland expressed surprise that the report should have gone out that the election of the president of the American Bar association had been developed de-veloped along political lines. "Nothing could be more incorrect," lie declared. "If such a condition should come to pass, the association would be wrecked. The best evidence that politics played no part is that a number of prominent Democrats favored by election, while a number of Republicans worked for the election of the man who opposed me." Appreciates Honor. Senator Sutherland feels deeply the honor that has been bestowed upon him by the legal fraternity of America. He ia the first man frnm th fnr wfst ever elevated lo the position and tlie. second in thirty years from west of the Missouri Mis-souri river. Prior to this year the only-president only-president of the association from west of the Missouri river was from Omaha. Sorne of the greatest lawyers In the United States have headed the organization organiza-tion such as former President William H. Taft, Elihu Root and Joseph H. Choate. Senator Sutherland will begin preparations prepara-tions at once for his campaign through the state. The greater part of the week probably will be spent in and around Salt Lake completing preparations, and next Monday he will open his campaign at Lelii. From there he will make a tour of the southern part of the state. |
