Show WILSON'S BOAST. AVhen President "Wilson boasts that he treats the big and the little nations alike he challenges his critics to review his foreign policy. Mr. Hughes did not hesitate to point out that Mr. AV i I -son, when he forbade lluerta to run for president in Mexico, acted as ho would not have dared to act in the case of a mighty nation. "Wo all remember how promptly Mr. Wilson backed up the demand of Admiral Ad-miral Mayo for a salute of the flag. "Salute the flag or we shall' wage war on you and your faction," was the ultimatum of the administration to Hucrta. The basis for the ultimatum was the arrest and detention of some of our marines. In the case of the Lus.itania there was no demand, that the flag be saluted. Had that demand gone forth from Washington Wash-ington there would hav been war with Germany. But it went forth in the Mexican Mex-ican crisis and the result was war, but as it was war with a weak nation the president was not so eager to keep out of it as he was to heep out of war with Germany. We are not attacking his desire to keep out, of war but his empty boast that he has treated the big and the little nations alike. . |
