A meeting meet-ing of the Industrial Workers of the World in Old Forge at noon today was raided by Sheriff Ben S. Phillips with the aid of a dozen of his deputies and twenty stato troopers, headed by Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Price, and all in the hall, 318 in all, were arrested, loaded into vehicles of various kinds and taken to the Lackawanna county jail, charged with riot. The authorities had issued orders that the meeti ntr w.nq Tint tn ' held. There were attempts to escape, but uo serious violence ou the part of the prisoners. For two weeks the I. V. W. men have been trying to tie up the Jermyn company com-pany collieries. The employees are about evenly divided between the I. W. W. and the United Mine Workers. The latter would not join in the strike, and the I. W. W. pickets by assault and various va-rious forms of intimidation, it is alleged, al-leged, have sought to keep them away from the mines. There have been daily disturbances, and filially the burghers, unable to cope with the situation, summoned the sheriff. The latter called in the state troopers. The saloons were ordered closed, meetings of the I. W. W. forbidden, forbid-den, and various measures taken to pre- Sheriff Phillips got word yesterday that the I. W. W. men planned a big secret meeting In Swartz hall at noon today, and elaborate plans were made to prevent it. Tho prisoners were escorted es-corted in squads from the hall and loaded into automobiles, ice wagons, coal wagons, motor trucks, drays and various other vehicles commandeered by the sherilf's men as fast as they hove in sight. Then the march to the county jail in this city was taken up in two divisions, the galloping troopers guarding the faster moving motor division, di-vision, and the deputies walking alongside along-side guarding the horse-drawn vehicles. ve-hicles. Sheriff Phillips will decide tomorrow what, to do with them.
