Show YEAR'S ATHLETICS IN CITY iraois Neither Panthers Nor Leop-: Leop-: ards Enjoyed Extraordinarily Extraordi-narily Successful Season. j Neither the West nor the East high ; school can boost of having accomplished much in athletics during (he past soa-son, soa-son, unless a third in the state meet may be called a triumph. In football the West high won, beating out .East high. Granite, Jordan and Ogden. In baseball the Panthers were better than the other local nines, but the quality of baseball was not up to its usual high standard. The East high Leopards garnered gar-nered third in the state track meet. 1 The West Panthers opened the year I with the brightest, of prospects, and iu football showed their class over the ! other local elevens. The line was big and heavy, and the backficld had some speedy warriors, boys who could tear around the ends and through the opposition opposi-tion 's line with startling success. "In Jar vis and Hansen the Panthers boasted boast-ed two of the speediest lads in Utah high schools. The football eleven of the fall of 1016 will be minus many of last year's players. Some of those who, according to present indications, will not be back are: Stan Johnson, Perc Hansen, Lester Les-ter Jarvis, Maurice Stiefel, Kink Claw-son, Claw-son, Russell Yeatcs, Howard Staines, Andy Caffey, Jack Maloue and George Gilligan. , The prospects for next season, sea-son, therefore, are not so bright. Now as to basketball: With a wonderful won-derful scholastic aggregation, Coach I Richardson saw large hopes of a state title. The team played the B. Y. U. 'in a practice game and won, and after 1 a few scheduled contests with local high schools there arose a squabble and the Sat Lake division withdrew, leav. i ing the Panthers out of the running for 1 the state hoop title. Efforts were made I to get the Panthers irjto the state meet I but to no avail, A challenge was sent 1 to the B. A.-.O.. the champs of the tourney, tour-ney, but it was not recognized. Of that peerless combination, Stan Johnson, Sid Spencer, Lester Jarvis, Kink ClawBon and Perc Hansen; will not be back, but there will "be Lolo Spencer, the sensational forward, as the only real star to return. Panther Diamond Stars. Jn baseball the Panthers had some real young stars and stand out as the j best club iu the local division. In fact,! Spike Hennessey, who is some pumpkins; as a baseball coach, and especially as a; developer of young material, said that with two weeks of systematic training, ! he thought they could .beat any am a-: teur club in the state. Such stars as' Mose Stiefel, Allen Conkwright, Mel-i vin Snelgrove, theBrown brothers and j Lester Jarvis are members of other fast clubs. j Stan Johnson, Mose Stiefel, Lester I Jarvis. Jack Malone and Perc Hansen j are among those who will leave, but in j baseball there appears" to be more hope1 than in other branches of athletics. On the track the Panthers won second sec-ond place in the division meet, but did not rank with the topnotchers in the i state meet. Those who won points in 1 the big contests were: Stan Johnson,! Al Warden, Vernal Funk and Lester Jarvis. Warden and Funk will be : back, while among the freshmen and, sophomores new stars are expected to j , appear. j I The East high had a mediocre year; ! in football, baseball and basketball., i winning but half their games. Tho I football team put up a good showing, but were victims of ill fortune, losing several cofltests by one or two point margins. Basketball started with every indication of proving successful only to I fall before the attacks of Granite, the; West high and L. D. S. U. Jn baseball I tho material was good. The boys showed all sorts of pep at the start, , but they were morning glories and to-: ward the end of the season played with i a don't-care spirit, which .displeased; their followers, and most of all dis- j pleased Coach Fitzpatrick. I In track the Leopards won the di-'1 vision meet and took third in the state1 meet, which is a good mark for a school! so recently established. Stars on the! track and field team were: Bing I Brown, Ken Barnes, Gordon Wirick and I the relay team (Barnes, Rudine, Prouse,1 Dorms and Winder). I Next year in football the Leopards 1 , lose R. Kelly, Leo Prouse, Glen Holt j and Art Drinen. Basketball will lose1 ! Clarence Rudine and Prouse. Baseball jwill be without Prouse, Rudine and Bill j j Banks, while in track Rudine, Prouse i and Winder will be absent. I Of courso, there is some good material t in the incoming class, and Coach Fitz-! Fitz-! patrick has several who did not win ; their letters this year that should prove j i stars in the future. Lee Prouse of the East high school j was awarded the F. C. Richmond medal for his good work in both athletics and in scholastic, endeavor. Coach Henry Richardson of the West high, according to authentic report, has j about decided to lay aside coaching du-; du-; ties, but a vigorous effort is being put. i forth to induce him to stav with the-job. the-job. .
