Show ALLEGED DEALERS li OPIUM JBE ARRESTED Fifteen Men and One Woman Wo-man Taken Into Custody by Salt Lake Police. OPIATES RECOVERED Said to Be Part of Proceeds Pro-ceeds of Robbery in Kansas City. With the arrest yesterday of fifteen men and one woman, alleged to be engaged in the traffic of opium and other drugs, Joseph Jo-seph C. Sharp, chief of detectives, says he believes that one of the biggest drug-trading drug-trading rings of the west has been broken. Twelve of the men were arrested at Bean's messenger office, fill Midway avenue. av-enue. The three other men and the woman were arrested at the Belmont hotel. Chief among those arrested is Jack Howard, 27 years of age, who describes himself as a messenger. Howard was arrested ar-rested following the receipt of a wire from Kansas City a uthorillcs sta ting that he was wanted in that city In connection with the theft of $3000 worth of drugs from Kli Lilly & Co. The burglary was committed com-mitted early this month. Howard left Kansas Cil y October 14, and since that date it is alleged that lie lias been busy distributing the drugs among his agents In Salt .Lake. Howard wan one of the quartette arrested ar-rested at the Belmont hotel. The other three were Harvey Pat ton, chauffeur. 22 years of age, who is said to have helped Howard pull the job in Kansas City ; Harry Allen, clerk. 23, and lCdna Wilson, waitress, 24, who is said to be Howard's sweetheart. Others in Custody. The dozen arrested at Bean's messenger messen-ger office are alb. messenger boys. They are: - Jack Cunningham, 25 years of age; Roy Bush, 21: K, Curshaw, 23; Joe Kenney, Ken-ney, 22; I... De Fraln, 24; J. E. O'Dell, 22; Bert Shank. 27; G. A. Matthews, 31; J. H. Cunningham. 22; Jack Miller, 23; Joe Green, 23, and H. F. Cappy, 33. The first raid was made on the messenger messen-ger office. Detective Sharp said that a large quantity of drugs, bearing the stamp of LaHy & Co., was found. The serial numbers were removed from all the bottles bot-tles anrf packages. A great part of the drugs recovered consist of hypodermic tablets tab-lets of heroin hydrochloride, each bottle containing 100 tablets of a strength of one-sixth one-sixth of a grain each. The messenger boys refused to testify against Howard. They denied knowledge of his whereabouts. Two hours later Detective De-tective Sharp discovered that Howard was stopping at the Belmont hotel and he was quickly arrested. Howard refused to talk. Since the robbery of the Kansas City house about two weeks ago, Detective Sharp said that the police had learned that the stolen drugs were being sold in Salt Iake. The heroin hydrochloride tablets tab-lets are said to have been sold at $4 a bottle. Viewed as Important. With the arrest of Howard the police say that the trading in drugs will be stopped. Messenger boys, the detectives learned, had a large clientele making periodical calls for the drugs. The police say they consider that Howard How-ard and Patton are to blame for the putting put-ting of the drug on the market, controlled, apparently, bv the messenger boys. While Patton is alleged to be Howard's partner. It Is said that Joe Kenney, one of those arrested at the messenger office, is, his business partner in the matter of the distribution dis-tribution of the drugs for sale in Salt Howard and Patton are being held for the Kansas City police. Kenney, it Is expected, ex-pected, will be arraigned in the local court. The sixteen arrested were held in jail last night, offers of friends to bail thera out being refused. |
