Show CORNELL WINS j TWO-MILE RACE -FDR FRESHMEN Syracuse Noses Out Pennsylvania, Penn-sylvania, With Columbia a Poor Fourth; Ithacans Have Easy Time. POUGHKEEPSIE. N. T., June 1?. Cornell's freshman crew prevented Syracuse Syra-cuse from sweeping the river in the twenty-second annual regatta, of the Intercollegiate Inter-collegiate Rowing association by winning" the two-miie race for first-year eights here shortly after noon today. Co&oh Courtney did not witness the victory of his freshman combination, having returned re-turned to Ithaca Sunday with the- defeated de-feated varsity and junior crews. The Cornell freshmen defeated Syracuse by about two and a half lengths. Ten Eyck's eisrht, after a thrilling race with Pennsylvania, nosed the Quaker freshman fresh-man crew out of second place by about two feet, while Pennsylvania was an ea-sy third over Columbia, which finished last by some six lengths. The official time follows: Cornell, 11:05 4-5; Syracuse, 11:15 3-5;. Pennsylvania, 11:16 1-5; Columbia, 11:29 2-6. The race was rowed upstream, with the wind and tide against the crews, and a light rain helping to flatten the water. -Syracuse was first away, but Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania jumped Into the lead at the quarter quar-ter mile, only to be ousted by Cornel II before the half-mile mark was reached. Prom this point the Ithaca eight was never headed and led at the mile by a length, with Pennsylvania second, one and a half lengths ahead of Syracuse, and Columbia last, a quarter of a length behind be-hind the Orange freshmen. Coming out from under the bridge. Syracuse spurted and soon drew up on even terms with Pennsylvania, leaving Columbia well astern. From the mile and a half point to the finish Interest centered in the battle for second place. Cornell easily holding first by two lengths. Syracuse and Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania fought stroke for stroke to the end, the former winning from the Quakers by a scant two feet. Columbia was last, several lengths in the rear of Syracuse and Pennsylvania. All the eights finished in good form and none of the oarsmen appeared to be particularly distressed or exhausted. . Captain John L. Collyer of the Cornell varsity returned to Ithaca with the freshmen fresh-men and it was announced that he would be operated upon for a tumor growing upon his chest. He wilie quartered in the same room in the Ithaca hospital with, Coach .Courtney, who returned on Sunday in the care of three nurses. |
