Nine miners entombed In th T.Ahlgh Coal and Navigation Naviga-tion colliery at Coaldale last Monday were rescued alive today. They were found on top of a chute in which they had rrRwled to escape a flood of water from an abandoned worktng. which caused more than 300 feet of gangway roof to fall, shutting off all eacapa. The men are in the hospital, and are expected to recover. The rescue wa accomplished after 200 mine workers and company officials hAd battled for six days against discouraging conditions in the choked-up gangway. ' After blasting and tearing away more than 300 feet of solid rock, coal and timbers tim-bers that had been wedged tightly into the gangway, rescuers reached the chute where the pitiful group of huddled humanity hu-manity was discovered. It was intensely cold in the little space, end the rescuers found the nine men. two of whom are scarcely out of their "teens," curled up In a compact mass to retain the warmth of their bodies. All were terribly weakened weak-ened by their 150 hours of waiting and praving, and with wan faces uplifted and eyes blinking at the strain of the unfamiliar un-familiar lights. Several ot the men talked cheerfully to their stretcher bearers while being taken from the mine, and from them It was learned that fish oil and a few crushed chicken bones, found In a dinner pall, had made up their principal diet until Thursday, when the latter "delicacy" "deli-cacy" gave out and the fish oil composition, composi-tion, used In their lamps, was the only Item on the menu. |
