Show TAFT APPROVES Former Pres dent Taft bel e es the Un ted States should establ sh more m 1 tar schools and that ou mob le armv shoull be increase 1 to 100 000 n en Hav ng cons dered the quest on of na tional defense as secretar of war and ch ef executive of the country there is no man living who s better qual f ed to express an op n on upon this sub ject than Will am Howard Taft In an nter ew with The Tr bune the former president v o ced h s sentiments regard ing new mil tary schools as follows I am heartily n accord with those who bel eve we should have more mil tary academies for the tra n ng of off cers We should have sev eral West Points I bel eve one should be located n the far west and perhaps one in the middle west I don t know about the strategic advantages of the different c t es of the west and would not care to suggest a location We have not now enough officers for the small stand ng army we now have We could easily use a num ber of other off cers both as 1 ne and staff off cers and also as m li tary instructors at the varjous schools Our n htary academ es should offer a good scholastic train mg as well as a techn cal m 1 tary training The tra ning of a larger number of off cers would greatly a d us fn preparing our defense The appo ntments to these acade m es I would say should be restr ct ed to the terr tory mmed ately tributary to the school We believe th s view w 11 be general lv held by the t me congress meets and that favorable action w 11 be taken some time during the coming winter The former pres dent and Senator Stone of IXissour probably do not agree upon many subjects n connection with the administration of the affairs of the United states but n the matter of more military schools they are thoroughly in accord Level headed men of all par ties will doubtless fall nto Une when the test comes In the meantime it be hooves the cit zens of Salt Lake, to be up and do ng |
