Groundless rumors ru-mors that an Anglo-French fleet had forced tho Dardanelles were largely responsible re-sponsible today for wiping out a substantia! substan-tia! advance tn the price of wheat. The market closed nervous at jic to c net decline. Corn finished c to ij4c above last night; oats up c to jfa'lo, and provisions pro-visions unchanged to 27$c down. Italian buyjng of 1.250,000 bushels of cash wheat here gave the market early an impressive show of strength. At the same time reports were current of a eud-den eud-den increase of insurance rates against Italy becoming involved in war. Speculators Specu-lators rushed to the bull side of the market mar-ket and there was a swift upturn In prices, new high levels being reached for the cash and December deliveries, with May Jumping to within 2Jc of the topmost figures since European hostilities began. Most opportunely for tho bears, vague stories were now heard that the Turks had lost control of the Dardanelles and that in consequence millions of bushels of wheat would come through the Med- itPrrpiiMn from RikkIb Denials of the supposed Anglo-French success near Constantinople were notable until too near the end of the session to have much effect on tho wheat market. Besides, predictions were numerous that the Argentine surplus crop would prove a good ual larger than recent estimates had led the trade to expect- Corn developed surprising stubbornness in the face of the bearish action of wheat. It was said that although higher prices for corn had brought out a little larger receipts, the country had not started the volume which many traders had looked for. The main influence upholding oats was the purchase of 1,000.000 bushels here to go to Italy. The British government gov-ernment was also reported to be buying oats on a big scale at Winnipeg.
