Show What Sort of Weather We May Expect This Winter By John T. Timmons, The Famous 8tudent of Weather Conditions SEISMIC disturbances lead me to pre diet a rather severe Winter in the North and especially the north western part of North America This cold weather will come In across the Nrth Pacific with such rapidity and severity at times that it will appear as If that section is being completely wrapped In snow and ice At the same time elements in more southern latl tudes will be creating Intense low-barometric low-barometric pressures which will rush northward and shove the cold waves off north of the United States There will be Intense atmospheric dls turbances In the Southern Hemisphere more especially after the days begin to lengthen Some of these disturbances will be jio marked as to cause consider able commotion about the Equator and even much north of that line Our Atlantic coast will be swept by several severe storms but the cold will not follow ((no suddenly or with such low temperature as Is isually the case In Winter when sea storms sweep in upon the land Sharply outlined but very marked warm waves will shoot northward clear Into Canada several times during the mid Winter months carrying Summer temperature which will make the aver age Wlnt r temperature much higher than It normally Is B Ik waves of n ensn noh rp will sprpal vpt Iho la I Up frenupntly causing heavy fogs and much sickness but the rainfall will be less than the average for Winter except in the farth est northwest corner of the country In that section much of the precipitation will be snow instead of the usual Win ter rains The Ohio and Tennessee valleys will be more free from floods during Winter and Spring than usual due partly to the fact that so much water has fallen In those sections during the past six months Spring floods If there are any are likely to be late Some of the western rivers will carry more than the average quantity of water during the early Spring months and pos slbly In late Winter Winter lightning and thunder will be experienced during all the mid Winter and Spring months and In pin es these phenomena will be very severe An clec trlcal storm with snowfall will not 1 e Improbable in many of the Middle and Eastern States but In most of these cases the weather will turn warmer Ins pa I of colder as we usually notloe after Win ter electrical displays We shall frequently rea 1 of snakes be ing found tn many locall les and tho proverbial groundhog will r n much of the time throughout a great part of the co intry It will be an excelle it Winter for capturing all kinds of f r bearing animals Rural roads will be bad In manv places owing to the Fall rains and lack of freezing weather In many other parts of the country there will I e splendl I highways and automobltlng will on ' tlnue d irlng a greater par of tl e Winter The fine A tumn wea her ll h has bpen general througl o I noB of e InnJ w ho ox eptlo of n fow hI r snf i nn wo ha p hI ead In LP h 1010 ho m i the West will continue- well toward the first of the year The caterpllljr which has been our guide in the past Is acting curio sly this year The first ones pointed to a long and severe Winter but these which were very few In number and were to be seen quite early have all disappeared No we find caterpillars varying some what in different localities In a vast territory including Ohio In dla a Illinois Pennsylvania West Virginia Vir-ginia and part of the Eastern States the caterpillar indicates a cold snap at the begl nlng of Wl ter b t followed by mild open weather with a sharp freeze at the close of th Winter months and in the early Spring Tl e dark markings on the back of the caterpillar Indicate Intensity of cold while tl e lighter or brown portion Indl cates tl e mild or open weather period A Inquiry directed to the writer list A ltumn brought o t the fact that cater pillars are not marked the same thro lgh o t tho entire country Another fa t revealed by diligent in n try Is hat where the caterpillars were marked to Indicate a certain condition last season this partloular locality had what was forecast I y the oaterplllar s marl Ings Thus If it Is found in some section tl e marking Indicate cold In mid Winter that Is If the dark Is about half way nlong the back of the caterpillar look out for that sort of weather Just tl ore In Tennessee one 'Winter there were lowpr temperat ires tl an wero oxperl rnrcd In most sections of Ohio a d In v developed the fnc tl at he osier I nr wnH marked to I dl h p fat 8 ox rlonco 1 In tha pn of the Uru It r B " e"c ved This is difficult tor some skeptics to believe but let Buch get to work and observe and suffer conviction Nature cuts some queer pranks but bo far as the writer has found nature does not lie Birds and butterflies are slow in lea Ing the northern sections especially in the eastern part of our continent This is a surprise to many who are. making a close study of migratory birds and their habits Insects are Blow in seeking hiding places and those which chirp or sing at night were still heard tn much of the country as late as mid October In many places that date also found humble bees stlU seeking honey from certain A itumn blossoms aid where the vegetation es caped the early frosts there was the most wonderful growth of almost all kinds of weeds snqh as are used for greens la early April or May Aut mn pastures were luxuriant and in the for eats nuts were not as plentiful as tl e usually are prior to a verj cold Winter There has been much written upon the disturbing influences upon the weather of the cannonading throughout Europe where war is raging No do bt this Is creating diit irbed conditions tn the immediate surrounding country and quite possibly the disturb ances may be so marked that their In fluence will reach for manyThun4reds of miles and coming In contact with dls turbances caised by other things mas have some Influence on our weather But such effect will more probably be felt In the more northern latlt ides and pon the sea between this country and Uurope It I 1 t e a i oo trr f0 Cp P t0l,d ,' loa enough o make hick solid Ice. |
