LOVDON Dec 11 Details were received re-ceived here today of a remarkable es cape of two Russ an pr soners of war who had been brought into Belgium by the Germans and forced to assist la fortifying the lines Several days ago some British sol d ers n a front line trench were startled by the sudden appearance of two young men who rose up in the barbed w re beyond the parapet One waved a rag and both shouted Russk Russki At the same time the Germans began to fire at them wildly The Br t sh jumped to the eonclus on it was a case of desertion but as they helped the men down into their trencn thev saw that both vore tattered Rus sian uniforms One of the men is 22 years of age and was n the Forty f rst S berian regi ment when he was captured on Feb ruary 11 at Prasnysz The other belonging be-longing to the Novoskolschi infantry regiment is 19 and was taken prisoner on June 8 on the Bznra CompeUed to Dig Thev were both sent to a camp just ins de the German front er lines about fifteen miles from Posen Here there were about 20 000 other Russian pris oners of var employed m road repair and field fortif cat ons close to tha frontier Their life was miserable and hard All the food they had was po tato bread and soup made of potato peelings Once a f ortn ght they were allowed one and one-half ounces of meat For the f rst few months they had no dr nk but water bnt afterward coffee w thout sugar All the pr soners of war were in their ragged Russian uni forms except a few dressed in Ger man uniform because their own clothes were utterly worn out in the stress of war d stinguished by a large yellow or blue str pe down the back of the great coat It was in the m ddle of October last that the first draft of men about 2000 of them vas sent from the camp into Belgium The two men who are now n our lines nth 2o0 comrades were brought to the Franco Belgian fron t er and after be ng deta ned were marched 5000 yards to a hamlet where there was a collect on of five wooden huts in wh ch the men were billeted in batches of fiftv Daily at 7 p m they ere marched out to the front here they were Bet to dig trenches Marched Many Miles Upon returning to the camp one even ing the two young men decided to risk an escape The sleeping hut was sur rounded by barbed w re and guarded by three sentr es German soldierB who had been inval ded and made incapable for more active service and the camp tself was patrolled With great luckl however the two Russian lads crawled through the barbed wire without ra s 'ing an alarm evaded the sentries and struck across country toward the sound of guns They traveled f ve or six miles that n ght and lay all next day in a d sused trench full of ater On the next n ght they went three m les further Here they reached some German trenches n a wood and crossed over several lines until they reached the first line trench, where they had the nearest chance of being caught Two men were standing at their loop holes and two others hadjust been re heved and were go ng off The Rus-s Rus-s ans crouched down crept a little further fur-ther off and climbing out of the frontline trench were immed ately in diff cult es w th the barbed wire Fortunately For-tunately it was not very strong and they succeeded in gett ng through it and crawl ng to the Brit sh trenches, hen they gave the r cry and were rescued with bullets flying about them |
