Show OR, H. W. REHERD IS FORILMLLED Inauguration of President of Westminster College Is Interesting Function. In the presence of a large congregation at the Third Presbyterian church last night, the Rev. Dr. H. "W. Reherd was formally inaugurated as president of Westminster college. Dr. George K. Davies, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, presided. Following the opening exercises. Dean Colladay read the Scriptures and the Rev. B. F. Broneon offered the prayer, .fudge George F. Goodwin, secretary of the board of tnistr.es, read the action of the board in electing Dr. Reherd to the office, and the oatli was administered by Dr. G. W. Martin, president or' the board. A elutrpe to t tie new president was then delivered by Dr. J. F. Clarke, associate secretary of the college board of New-York. New-York. Dr. Clarke said that the new president would no longer be looked upon as a phs-tnr phs-tnr or a missionary, but would be called an educator; yet his charge might all be summed up in three words: "Be an evangelist." evan-gelist." Tie siiid he did not mean by (hat that tiie Christian eritrca tor should seek to make Presby t ei-ians or .MethodlslH or adherents of any other sect, nor even Him t he should seek to ma Up nominal Christians, but that his ideal should ever he that for which all the churches exist to make men who do the will of God and to form characters of the highest type-Dr. type-Dr. Clarke added: This is tbe true aim of education. J-ea din? educators all say so. Kd ileal il-eal ion "is sel f -real i an t ion. The purpose pur-pose of education is to bring an immature im-mature person to realize himself and Ills destiny as h person. Thus the true end of educa lion and the t rue aim of the churches are tbe same. This needs to he emphasized. The tendencv is to look on education as a means of making a living, hut the true purposo is to make a life- Men are hut half educated when they ate trained to do things, to eet things. The ohjert is to realize themselves as persons to become men of the truest tvpe Dr. Arnold Tompkins says that Hie "true aim of a!! teaching Is one with the true end of life." and this is so The true end of life is to he a m.-in. an ideal m;ni. a man like Jesus Christ. ' Following t his address President Re-herd Re-herd delivered his inaugural, ht-ttlng forth (he aims and ideals of the institution. He said, in part : One year ago today 1 was elected president of Westminster college. The year's experience has convinced me of the great importance and large hopefulness of this work, so that I am ready to accept in this' more formal for-mal way the duties of the presidential office. It Is fitting that T should share with you my Ideals for our institution. My conviction that there is an important im-portant place for a Christian college by the side of a state university is based upon facts. Its presence here adds to the sum of education and culture cul-ture and makes the city a more desirable de-sirable place in which to live. No less an authority than Dr. Henry S. Pritchett, secretary of the Carnegie foundation for teaching, says that from an education point of view Westminster college is needed in this strategic center. With the growth in population and in desire for higher education more students will demand training than our state Institutions can handle without duplicating their prcs-enl equipment. The Evangelical churches of TUah need a Christian college to supplement supple-ment their work and the state needs It to furnish "It citizens of strong character. Westminster, therefore, is abundantly justified in its existence. exist-ence. The plea of the college may he summed up under these heads: First, a plea, for n united ronslit neney in Tiah to upbuild the institution a nd trust sons and daughters to II: second, sec-ond, an equipment and endowment to enable it to suceessfu 11 y ca vry nut its nrogrn mmc. II needs $ 1 ,00u,'ni0 in the next ten years S.'.nfi.luO for buildings und equipment n"d o'W.Oitn for endowment. |
