Aids Dje makers, When the eatportat on of coal tar products by Germany was stopped by the wa and man facturers who se dves and those who make explos ves could not obta n the necessary mgredi ents the bureau called attention to the fact that there was n this country a great abundance of raw nater al and that $ o 000 000 worth of these prod utts were being wasted each ea through the use of the beehive coke oven instead of the bv prod ct oven It rged a cautious bu ldmg up of the industry and the result has been the construction ot add t on a b product coL.e o ens that have added to the yearly outp t several n llhon gallons ot benzol needed in chemical manufac tures ' The bureau at the safme time ga e to $he country a process de sed bv one of ts chemists Dr W F Rittman for the manufacture from petroleum of benzol and toluol used in the man nfacture of dyes and high explosives This process has since been demon strated on a commercial scale Its importance to this country lies m the f,act that it g ves the United States an important sou roe of material use ful in the mak ng of high explosives something it did not have before Dr Kittman also devised a process which will enable refiners to increase the out pat of gasoline from crude petroleum 900 per cent or even more the patent right to th s process to be dedicated to the p bl c to prevent monopoly Big Saving in Gas The bureau has developed that the fosse to the -oil and natural gas industry tn a year s time through careless ana reckless exploitation amounts to $o0 000 000 ana "has devised and demon strated a practical process for drilling wells by which the waste of gas and the invasion of water may be stopped, thus saving in a single state natural gas worth more than $15,000 000 , Looking into the future the bureau is w estigating the vast deposits of the so called oil shales of Utah and Colo rado believing that the oil supply will come from them and at no distant pe nod These shales it is said rival as sources of petroleum the oil shales of Scotland and New South Wales which havebeen profitably exploited in spite of the continued competition of oil from Other sources The studying of the combust on of coal by experts of the bureau has led to certain information that calls for new designs for furnaces which will prove more economical The investigations have disclosed that in many manufac tunng plants the space in the furnace where the coal is burned is not suf ficient and eeonom cal burning of the coal is impossible This information is to be given to the manufacturers of .boilers so that the designs may be al tered to snit the cond tions Developing Gasf producer The experts of the bureau have been endeavoring to de elop the use of what s known as the gas producer which burns a much lower grade of cal than the steam bo ler and produces bwer, t is sa d at less expense than other methods They deplore the tendency in this country toward the almost ex elusive use of high grade coals and point to the ruthless waste and neglect of low grade fuels which is in sharp contrast to the s tuation in Europe Jt s the expectation of these experts to 1 ve to see the ra lroads of the countrj operated bv electr city obtain ng the r fiower from gigantic gas produoer plants ocated at the mines The bureau, n co operat on w th the Lniversity of North Dakota has been endeavoring to give a help ng hand to the west in its rather difficult problem of burning lign te coal of which there are vast areas in North Dakota and the ne ghboring states The burea is a ra ng to develop better ai pi anees
