Show WIRELESS CLOSED. The Marconi Radio company refused to recognize the right of the United States to censor its messages, and as a result its wireless station at Siascon-set, Siascon-set, Mass., was closed bv order of Secretary Sec-retary of the Navy Daniels. President Wilson has been making every possible effort to enforce his neutrality proclamation, proc-lamation, but the wireless people, with a little cold cash in sight for carrying contraband news, declined to give assurances as-surances that their business would be conducted in accordance with the president presi-dent 's view. When the order to close the station was issued, John W. Griggs, president of the company, filed an application in a federal court for an injunction to restrain re-strain the naval officers from closing or censoring the station. Either the injunction was not issued or the radio company weakened at the last moment and withdrew its application, for there was no legal barriers raised when Ensign En-sign Nixon took possession of the plant. The result would have been the same had the injunction proceedings been started, for Secretary Daniels, backed by an opinion from the office of tho attorney general, had given the ensign positive instructions to close the station regardless of injunctions, writs of prohibition pro-hibition and the like. The president has been commended far and wide for his neutrality proclamation, procla-mation, and his request that the citizens citi-zens of the Gnit'Xl States refrain taking tak-ing sifles in the great struggle now going go-ing on in Europe. Evidently the Mar-coni Mar-coni people failed to grasp the full import im-port of the executive's words. If they did understand his neutrality proclamation procla-mation they did not foresee what would happen if they persisted in considering themselves beyond the reach of the commander in chief of the army -and navy of the Enited States. Having been taught a needed lesson by the closing of their plant, perhaps tho managers man-agers of the Marconi Radio company will be willing to act fairly with the government if again allowed to transact trans-act business. |
