NAMES CALDERON AS HIS CANDIDATE Replies to Message From Officials in Mexico City Who Protested Against His Attitude. CHIHUAHUA CITY, Mexico, Sept. 27. Immediate resignation of General Va-nustiano Va-nustiano Carranza as first chief of the constitutionalists is the only basis, on which General Francisco Villa will agree to settlement of differences between himself him-self and CarranA. This was his reply today to messages from officials in Mexico Mex-ico City, who protested against his attitude atti-tude toward Carranza. Villa declared he never would accept Carranza as head of the republic. General Gen-eral Villa's reply, as given out here today, to-day, follows: I lament the circumstances that have brought ahout grave danger, but sincerely protest that my sole ambition am-bition will be to arrange existing difficulties dif-ficulties without shedding blood If possible 1 emphatically state, however, that ! the only move that can bring" about cessation of hostilities on my part is that Venustiano Carranza deliver supreme command to Fernando Iglesias Calderon so that, in the shortest possible time, elections may be called. Fernando Iglesias Calderon, the choice of General Villa for president of Mexico, some months ago was mentioned as a possibility possi-bility for the presidency during his trip to Washington, where he conferred with American officials. He at present Is in Mexico City, it is said. Calderon Is leader of the liberal party, a political organization organiza-tion which allied itself with the constitutionalists' consti-tutionalists' revolution. It had been announced an-nounced that he would run at the elections. elec-tions. While an answer to Villa's proposal Is awaited from Mexico City, the northern leader has not halted his movement of troops toward the opposing Carranza forces. As yet no conflict has occurred. It was said officially.
