All in all it is a great finish to a well-organiz-playground movement which pays dividends to both the com-munity and the boys who par-ticipate. i Playground Activities By Bailey Santistevan. Director In winning the state American Legion championship at Ogden last week we realized a goal that has been our aim for several years. I consider this champion-ship one of the greatest prizes offered in competition in this state or any state, for that mat-ter. The American Legion in return gives to the boys on the winning team a wonderful trip which should be one of the highlights oi their careers. The tournament this year will be held in San Diego and the Bingham boys are anxiously awaiting the time to catch the train which will take them to their destination. The boys will be put up in first class style, traveling by pullman, berths and dining car service to and from San Diego. They will be met at San Diego by taxi-cab- s to transport them to the finest hotel in the city, where they will be quartered during their stay. The champion-ship teams of Nevada, Arizona and California will also be there, to fight it out for the western sectional championship. Competition is very keen at this California tournament, to be hold Saturday and Sunday, Aug-ust 12 and 13. No team has ever defeated a California team in tournament play and last year San Diego won the American Legion world series in the east. We perhaps will draw the Cali-fornia team as our opponent. They generally pair Nevada and Arizona, Utah and California. Our team is small and not as experienced as last year's squad, but they won the tournament this year by hard fighting and good pitching. I am sure we will give a good account of ourselves out in the seventh. Results, ,. The American Legion baseball team won the state championship. They are playing a benefit game Friday and deserve the support of every citizen in this district. Let's send our boys to San Diego with the best of them. The game is at 5 p. m., admission 25c. Gemmell is sailing along under a full load of steam this second half, despite the fact that they have lost two of their regulars by injury. Ralph Fielder, their new third baseman, who was hitting and fielding in great style, was hit by one of Lee Johnson's fast balls on the head. He has been in the hospital for a week, but at the last report was getting along fine and is expected out any day now. Frank Zaccaria has had an infection on his knee and has been laid up. Now no learn can lose a ball player like Zac and not miss him. He has been leading the team in hitting and the league in home runs, so Santy will be glad when he is able to go up there and take his cuts. The suspension of Fred Tedesco, Pinney manager, was upheld in a meeting at Provo Monday night, so he will be out until August 24. The directors also voted suspension of Ab Liddell, the umpire who had the run-i- n with Fred, for not reporting the incident to the league president. - Sports Here and There liy AI Ablett Bingham sportsmen are golf conscious. Wednesday morning we counted 18 from Bingham enjoying a round at Nibley park. This course has become known as the Bingham country club. Jerry Henderson, the pro, his assistant and the starter have all cooperated in showing Bingham players every courtesy. Thanks, fellows! Ray Wylie of Aruba, Dutch West Indies, has been visiting in Bingham and playing golf. He has played from New York to Frisco, but Wednesday was the day he said he'd remember. The tennis tournament held for Utah Copper employes and their families was a success in every way. It is surprising, the caliber of tennis that is being played in Bingham these days. A few years ago there were about 10 people who played the game, but now the courts at Copperton are busy day and night. If you don't think they play tennis, I advise you to stop there some evening. Jack Latimer won the singles title, defeating the old stand by Joe Miya. Helen Loveless won the ladies championship. Helen has played some great tennis the past year. Besides this title she also holds the B.Y.U. championship. Jack is stylist of the first water. Every shot is a picture. I think the only thing he needs to go a long way in the game in a strong-er service. Steve Pickering Jr. won the J tWWM-- ( J "AMERICA'S ccd..i , rr1 GREAT WHISKEY BUY!"
