EXCAVATION STOPPED TO PROTECT HIGH LINE Fearful lest tho high pressure water main that supplies the 'Capitol hill reservoir res-ervoir migbt be endangered by the work, the water officials yesterday ordered or-dered James Stewart & Co., contractors, to stop their excavations for gravol at a point in lino with State stroet and Thirteenth avenue. The city entered into a contract with the company by which gravel could be extracted from the hillside at that point, the gravel to be used in tho construction of tho state capitol building, and the city to receive re-ceive a slight stipend for caeh load of gravol removed. YeBterday inspectors for the water department found that the company was excavating iu such a manner that if it continued tho support for tho high line pine would bo torn away, should that pipe break, not only would a great flood ol water come down directly into the city, but also a soc-tion soc-tion 01 the city, including the Hotel Utah and the Mormon temple, would be without water. Commissioner W. H. "Korns was advised ad-vised of the situation and immediately ordered that work be stopped. Arrangements Ar-rangements will have to be made whereby tho excavations aro carried on in a different direction. |
