Tho interior in-terior department, in reporting today on Senator Warren's bill to donato a million acres of public laud to the state of Wyoming to bo sold or leased by the state to aid in Iho construction and maintenance of public roads, indorsed I tho irinciplo of tho bill and recommended recom-mended that as an experiment 250,000 acres., of land bo donated for public voad aid to each of tho states of Wyoming, Wyom-ing, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Montana, Idaho, New Mexico arid Nevada. The' department recommends that the lands bo -sold at not leas than $-1' per acre, which would give each of the states $1,000,000 for roads work, or, if leased, that a rental be fixed which would give the state an income equal to about 5 per cent of the value of tho lands. It is suggested that the administration of tho lands donated bo placed in the hands of the governors and land boards of the reBpectivo states and tho lands disposed of under r.ules and regulations to be prescribed by the interior department. depart-ment. Bills similar to the Warren bill have been introduced granting from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 acres to their respective states by Senators Sbafroth of Colorado, Colo-rado, Smoot of Utah, Pittman of No; vada, Ashurst of Arizona and Catron of New Mexico. It is believed that the senate public lauds committee, which has the various bills under consideration, considera-tion, will adopt the recommendation of the department. |
