Show H INDUSTRY IS BEDS PERFECTED Ozokerite of State Brought to Successful Basis at Col-ton, Col-ton, Utah. PRODUCT GOES EAST American Company Sends the Third Shipment From Us Milling- Plant. While in Salt Lake a few days ago L. V. Shearer, general manager of tho American Ozokerite company of Colton, Utah, released the Information that his company was proparing to make tho third shipment of tho company's product to tho eastern market, thereby demonstrating demon-strating that tho ozokerite Industry of tho state haa boon launched upon a highly high-ly successful and profitable bards. It Is not generally known that thorn aro only two spotn on tho faco of the globo where this valuablo hydrocarbon Is found, ami one of these Is within tho state of- Utah. A3 to what, ozokerite happon3 to be. tho following Interesting account is given in tho Now Standard Encyclopedia: Ozokerite Explained. "A valuable mineral found In large deposits In Ftiih and in tho Austrian province of Oallcla. It Is Impossible to enumerate all tho uses to which ozokerite can be put. As tho rival of beeswax It has already materially reduced t'; prl'-e of that product, but ccrosln possossp."' many valuablo qualities not found In other waxes. Its melting point is high, from 155 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It Is plastic without being soft, and bard without brittleness; It decolorises without with-out destruotivn distillation. Alkalis and the stronger acids make no Impression on It. and when refined It Is odorless and Is used for tho Insulation of electric wires. It Is valuable for all kinds of waterproofing, and papers waxed with it are being largely used In wrapping soap, steels, boxes and all kinds of articles that require protection from moisture: boxes, barrols and kegs lined with It ore perfectly tight and It Imparts no unpleasant un-pleasant flavor to tho contents even In tho case of the most delicate mineral water. wa-ter. Ozokoiitc permeates the pores of the wood Instead of giving It a motalllc surface coating. Ozokerite Is also used In lining tunks In which powerful acids aro to bo mixed.- H Is estimated that three-fourths of tho candles used In the churches In thin and other countries arc mado of ozokerite or of beeswax strongly adulterated with ozokerite. The Illuminating Illum-inating power of such candles Is stronger than that of others, whllo they drip but little and never lop over when exposed to ordinary atmospheric heat. All wax figures fig-ures and wax dolls are made of ozokerite; It also enters Into the manufacture of Imitation alabaster statuettes, and the elaborate decorations which sometimes adorn wedding enkes and other confections. confec-tions. Among other uses to which It is put are making of Hnamonts, salves and plasters. Sealing wax. wax matches, life preservers, boot blacking, varnish and shoemakers' wax." In the development of the ozokerite fields near Colton owned by the American Amer-ican Ozokerite company, the management j lias forty men on its payroll; a srreal deal of earnest work has been done to date, ns can ho seen from the fact that ?135.-000 ?135.-000 has been spent during the past year In development effort. The company owns it? own milling plant of 100 tons daily rapacity, which Is kept husy with throe shifts dally. This mill Is less than two miles distant from the town of Colton, Col-ton, and the company Is now engaged upon plans for a second mill which w,W be erected without delay, and which will be located in the town of Colton. Possibilities Great. What this industry should and will likely mean to the town of Colton and tho stnto of Utah can be gathered from the fact that the town In Austria which is the center of the Austrian ozokerite Industry has o population of 12,000, entirely en-tirely due to the development and permanency per-manency of thlB Important industry. The largest consumers of ozokcrllo In America aro the weather-proof insulating! manufacturers, the product being used for hardening rubber, in electrotyping. phonograph cylinders, buttons, shoe polish, pol-ish, waterproof crayons, while the prod-: net cescrln enters Into Innumerable uses throughout tho Industrial world, in the Austrian field the workmen first confined their operations around tho "mountain tor" deposits, as the ozokerite was there and then termed, to gathering the associated asso-ciated petroleum, and It Is likewise the case at Colton that petroleum Is found in tho vicinity of the other. The American company is the owner of a vast amount of territory- And Its possessions arc within a field considerably considera-bly larger than the foreign fiold. from which, to date, over 580.000,000 worth of ozokorlto has been produced. In order to demonstrate the merits of the oil lands of the American company, Mr. Shearer left for tho cast several days ago for the purpose of purchasing a rig. and the first drlllliiir will bo done on property that la within two miles of the railroad tracks. Mr. Shearer anticipates that the oil possibilities pos-sibilities of his company will prove very extensive. Extent of Utah Veins. In a recent report upon the properties 1 of the American rompany, Rlclimd .1. Kroupa, who has spent considerable time In the foreign field, has the following to say : "The veins In the Utah field run from two feet In width to upwards of thirty l'ect. in wl'dlh, which, with an average. of 3 per cent wax and the cheapness of mining those deposit and the process which has been worked out by the American Ameri-can Ozokerite company for refining the low-grade ores, makes tile success of the enterprise with proper financial backing a certainty beyond all doubt and a success suc-cess that will repay immense dividends in the future if properly handled. It will really now develop Into a big manufacturing manu-facturing enterprise. In tho making of various compounds, Insulations and waxes too numerous to mention, und with the almost certain development of oil with depth It adds much more to the value ot the enterprise. One thing above all thai must be borne in mind, and that is, this material comes from depth and the more deep mining that Is done tho bigger these mines will be, and I would recommend recom-mend the sinking of deep shafts on any or U of the properties of the company at the, earliest possible time to assure tho supply of a big tonnage that will bo necessary nec-essary as these fields are developed." The American demand for ozokerite has Increased very materially In the brief period pe-riod since being brought Into commercial use, the Imports of this material In 100S being S.nOu.flOS pounds, against' 5G,6iiS pounds in 18S3. The Utah company, therefore, finds a continually widening market for Its mill product, the demand far exceeding the supply. Deposit Important. In regard to the Utah field Mr. Kroupa says: "The Utah ozokerite belt or wax zone extends from about one mile west of Mcdla on tho Denver & Rio Grande railroad, rail-road, along tho southern and western slope of the. Wasatch range to Soldier Summit and across to about two miles northeasterly from Colloij, extending through Utah and Wasatch counties, In all a dlntanco of twelve mllen. and not exceeding at any point from one to two miles in width. "The zone Is located in a great fault that is common in the Wasatch range and tho fractures that hold the ozokerite In this belt cut transverse or across the great fault. This great fault has an Important Im-portant bearing on the presence of this wax when you leave this fault for a certain distance no trace of wax Is found. All of the development work done In this belt up to tho present time Is In these fractures or veins. Tho largest body of solid wax struck In tin: wax belt up to the prosont time was In the schuto on tho property at Soldier Summit, and thero has been taken large bodies of almost pure wax from the various properties extending ex-tending from Media at Ihc Acme property prop-erty to the various properties around Colton. "The fault Above roforrod to passes through the Acme property at Media or Midway, thence oaal through the Soldier Summit proporty. thence southeast through the Colton properties of the company. I am satisfied from past development de-velopment that there aro a largo num-bor num-bor of theso fractures, called blind veins, across this great fault and a gradual development of these fractures or veins by doop shaft mlninc and drifting on the vein and finally cutting Into the rault system, wliich I belie-o will be found to be the source of all of tho ozokerite in this wax zone." |
