Show SrUIECES 11 DONE SiJISf Episcopal Church Commissioners Commis-sioners Ask City Govern- ' ' ment to Enforce Law. POINT TO INFRACTIONS Charger Building Operations on Busiest Corners Are Prosecuted on Sabbath. Alleging that the city commissioners are not. enforcing tho laws pertnlnlng to preventing unnecessary labor on Sunday, the .social service commission of tho Episcopal church for the district of Utah has addressed n. letter to the commission commis-sion asking Unit such laws be .more strictly observed. The Rev. V, W, Keese signs the com-j muuieat'fon as chairman. The letter asserts as-serts that on lust Sunday workmen were seen laboring on three prominent Main st root corners on reconstruction work. It is also alleged that men were seen working In the streets and that grading contractors did not observe tho Sabbath. In conclusion, the letter asset ts that if the olty commission does not tnlcc action ac-tion the county authorities will be asked to step In. The letter reads: "We shall refrain from directing his attention l referring to the county attorney to the matter until ou have hud further opporttinitv to enforce en-force tho law," Tho same mail which bore the communication com-munication to the city commissioners Included a copy for County Attorney I. E. WHIley. Say Law Disregarded. The letter whlph was addressed to the mayor and . city commissioners was as follows: Before the members of your bodv came Into office, we directed vour attention to the disregard of tho former for-mer administration for tho statute of the state, which forbids all Sunday Sun-day work, not of necessity In constant con-stant operation. One of your members mem-bers replied that H would be the purpose of the commission to have the law obeyed. Wo havo seen, however, during the pat summer, that one of the municipal mu-nicipal departments permitted work to be done on Sunday. Grading eon-tractors eon-tractors worked constantly on that day. Wo believe tho municipal authorities au-thorities should set an example to the citizens by their "strict obedience to hud respect for (he law. We have made nn Investigation and find that many of the employees and the workmen prefer not to work on Sunday. They tell us they were not accustomed to work elsewhere on that day, but the laxity iu the enforcement enforce-ment of the law hero Is an Incentive to disregard the law. Ask for Enforcement. After nlno months in office, you have not prevented building and other unnecessary work from being operated on Sunday, although the attention of tho police department has been called several times to noticeable Infractions of the law. Last 'Sunday, for example, many thousands of strangers were In the city, drawn here by their religious convictions. They could and doubtless doubt-less did observe work in operation on tho three busiest corners of Main street. Will you not therefore, through tho police department, notify, on this coming Sunday, thoso employers of labor who are found breaking lite law. of their offense and have them desist? Our Interest in this matter Is wholly based upon our dcslro to aid In the bringing about of a greater respect for law and good order In the community. As the county attorney has expressed ex-pressed his willingness to co-operate in enforcing the law, wc shall refrain from directing his attention to the matter until you have had further opportunity to onforco the law. Respectfully yours; ' SOCIAL SERVICE. COMMISSION OF THE EPISCOPAL CHTJRCTI FOR THE DISTRICT OF UTAH. W. W. Roean. |
