Show NAME SYNDICATE TO BUILD CUP DEFENDER NEWPORT. R. T., Sept. 12. The members mem-bers of tho New York syndicate which has placed with Nat Herreshoff the order or-der for a yacht as a. candlatc for defender of the America's cup became definitely known tonight for the first time. The men who have agreed to subscribe the funds for the yacht are Cornelius Van.-derbllt, Van.-derbllt, Frederick C. Bourne. J. P. Morgan, Mor-gan, Henry Walters, Arthur Curtlss, James and George F. Baker. All are members of the New York Yacht, club. The namo of the managing director of the new yacht came as a surprise in local yachting circles. It Is Robert "SV. Emmons Em-mons m of Boston. He is a member of the New York Yacht club, although up to this season he has been connected more prominently -with the Eastern Yacht club. Mr. Emmons has been sailing Harry Payne Whitney's 50-footer. Barbara, In the races of that class this, summer and has had much previous racing experience experi-ence as owner and skipper of the old sloop Avenger. That there will be a second syndicate, largely If not wholly composed of New York Yacht club members, to back n second sec-ond candidate for cup defense honors is practically certain, according to a man closely connected with the syndicate already al-ready formed. A third candidate Is bo-ing bo-ing talked of, and may materialize. |
