Show HOW IT DOESN'T WORK. When Sccrotary McAdoo of tho Treasury Treas-ury Department spaing his scheme for lending government monoy to tho amount, of $50,000,090 up to $150,000,000 to tho banks of tho South and West for crop moving purposes, it was supposed that that would ease the money situation situa-tion and relievo Now York from sending money "to movo the crops." As a mat-tor mat-tor of fact, New Yorls; never furnished tho monoy to move the crops. All that is done is that tho banks of the South and "West that have their reserves and surpluses deposited iu Now York call in their money to meet tho domand for crop-moving purposes; and that is exactly ex-actly what is being dono now. Now York is not only being called upon to return tho money on deposit and call thoro, but is obliged this year to invade in-vade its own reserves to help out. For cxamplo, tho surplus reserve in the New York banks has dwindled $22,000,000 in jfpur weeks, and is ndw down to a trifle over $1,000,000, which is almost nervously close for this season of tho year. ' Again," a number of the banks have refused to take the money from the government, gov-ernment, seeing no . way to use it profitably profit-ably aftor paying the government's charges and transportation. But the mere fact that New York' banks aro thus calling upon their own reserves' is a sufficient suf-ficient notice that tho McAdoo proposition, proposi-tion, while it may have seemed acceptable, accept-able, in fact is boing largely uoglectod by the banks and scorned even by tho farmers, who iu their National Allinnco meotings aro declaring against the McAdoo Mc-Adoo proposition; Booing in it no advantage ad-vantage for themselves; and since both banks and farmers roject tho proposition, proposi-tion, thorc does not seem to be vcr3r much left of it for use. |
