Show CHARGES BROUGHT J AGAINST WHALEY , Smoot Holds Tip Nomination of Mon- J tana Man: Irregularities in Sale of Butter Alleged. j Special to Tho Tribune. WASHINGTON. June 13, The nomination nom-ination of William C. Whalej' of Mon- 1 tana to bo collector of internal reve- 1 nuc for the district comprising Utah, J Montana and Idaho, was held up today to-day by Senator Smoot ponding an investigation in-vestigation of alleged irregularities by Whaley in conducting a creamery in 1 which ho is interested. Recently it is alleged that the treasury department imposed a tax of .$600 on .Whaley for . the sale of butter containing over 16 ( per cent moisture, this being the mini- J mum percentage allowed b' tho department depart-ment regulations. Whaley, it is said, paid this tax in settlement of the j case. I It is alleged that a cimilar case is -pending which has not been settled, but treasury department officials while admitting the settlement of one case, would not verify the charge that an- other case is pending. Senator Walsh of Montana tried to have tho nomination of Whaley reported report-ed favorably by the finance committee ( today, by having the committee polled. All of the majority members of the committee favored reporting the nomination nomi-nation but Senator Smoot objected and insisted that Whalcv'B record in the ( treasury department be investigated. |
